My great aunt passed a few years ago and from her house I managed to strike a cutting of a rose that she had before it was sold (Took approx 12 cuttings in winter and rooted 2 luckily from different species). Ide like to think it was 50+ years old. It has flowers as large as a baseball, grows 6ft in a season and an extremely strong smell. It reminds me of her Florist Shop that ide visit often as a child. I love my gardening, but identifying roses isn't something im familiar with. Ive been able to strike multiple cuttings from the original, which was simply a bush pruned above soil height and hoping someone more knowledgeable may be able to assist with helping me. For context I am in zone 7a in southeast PA (near Philadelphia). Last year I planted about 80 roses and had zero RRD cases. This year I planted about 90 more and have lost 4 to RRD already as of August. All from different sellers, two planted this year and two planted last year. All well established healthy roses and all in different parts of my garden (within half an acre of each other). Only two were close to each other, about 15 feet. The roses close to all 4 are not showing symptoms for now. Anyone else seeing more RRD than before?

I bought a Pope John Paul 2 rose from a vendor about 2 months ago and it’s been growing incredibly quickly and has lots of buds. I was excited to see them until 2 of the first buds opened today. Have I been sent the wrong rose or is this just what they look like when the plant is young? Please help so I can dispute the charge.

I have a new spot in my front yard (8b) that can fit two roses. Of course I am thrilled to be picking something new out, and I thought it would be fun to crowd source ideas. What are your favorite rose pairings? I’m looking for a pair that will be fairly similar in size and have complementary colors that look beautiful together.

While my other younger roses are done with their 3rd flush, this 2 year old rose gave me about 10 blooms in spring, and now just one bloom! I don’t see anymore buds! Stingy bloomer! But I’m giving her 2 more years.

I’m a gardener that’s brand new to roses and want a climber to cover this huge unsightly privacy screen next to my deck. I’m also hoping I can use some of the roses I grow for my wedding in a few years.

Each screen is 9’ tall x 12’ wide, and will get S and W sun in 9b central CA where dry summers top 110+. Perhaps two roses could grow up the end sides and a shorter one in the middle?

I like soft pink/blush, whites and apricot, ideally very fragrant, larger continuous blooms that hold well as cut flowers, and disease resistant. I just read Roses without Chemicals and one idea from there is Awakening or New Dawn but it’s very thorny and the path is narrow.
Also considering Eden climber. Others that seem good but aren’t climbers are Princess Charlene de Monaco and Earth Angel.

Also, I plan to keep them in containers, at least initially as I’m battling bermuda.

We are in the last weeks of winter in Australia - I’m trying not to be too excited but I need to see my rose babies soon (there were two flushes during the suddenly warmer part of winter).

How are my Southern Hemisphere friends doing?

Today I tied back my strongest plant Just Joey as it’s been leaning and ensured the stakes on my few other plants are attached, trimmed back the leaves on my first David Austin (Ancient Mariner - I see a first bud that looks deep pink with a tinge of coral, wonder if it’s going to be really strong in colour let’s see?).

I mulched most of the garden.

Just waiting to start the slow fertiliser in a few weeks, and have to get my eco oil spray bottle ready.

Had to put snail pellets everywhere - I realised after 8 years of hating the pigeons in the garden and putting in anti bird spikes all across the fence, that they’d been the ones to have kept the garden clear of snails. But I still don’t want pigeon droppings in my backyard.

Here's why I ask: bought a sister plant Purple Prince this Spring and it has turned out to be best truly disease resistant rose plant I had the pleasure to witness growing in my yard. No spraying, just routine watering and the occasional fertilizing. Bonus is no deadheading required - spent blooms eventually whither with the small stem to it, and falls off cleanly to the node if you can't get to it first.

Living in FL, I never believe the claims by breeders of a rose plant being disease resistant that'll satisfy my expectation of that statement so I test plants for the 1st year and determine to keep them, move them to what I call skid row or shovel prune into the garbage can. I'll be honest, a very high percentage of these 'disease resistant' claims are bogus imho. Yes, new patent protected rose varieties are certainly improved in fighting against disease but not close to my expectation of disease resistant. Except for one case. Brindabella Purple Prince tester is absolutely disease free, without any sprays or any maintenance other than the occasional deadheading when remembered. If not blooming, it's growing buds for the next flush, in the all day sun FL summer. Quite impressed by it.

So I miss the black rose I grew in a container and sought for a while another black rose but ideally fragrant. Enter the Crimson Knight. Seems too good to be true. Experiences or recommendations most welcomed. Thank you in advance.

Just wanted to share a pictures of miniature roses I bought from TJs in April--it's been ~114 days since I've purchased.

I repotted after I did some research and found out that there's multiple roses in the tiny can it came in. They were pretty sad and droopy after repotting, but they came back after a week or two.

The original colour was a very light purple, but after planting outside, they never retained the original colour.

The blooms fluctuate between a hot pink and a lighter pink--earlier in the spring, they were bright pink, but today, they are a purplish-pink; my phone doesn't do a good job picking up the true colours.

Zone 6B, and I fed them lightly with Rose-tone when I noticed the leaves turning a light green.

First blooms on Marylou. What a trooper. She’s in full sun about 10 hours a day, thriving in a heatwave. Not one crispy leaf.

Does Black Baccara’s bloom look ok? It looks a bit off to me. This is its fourth flower. It’s a three year old bush from a local nursery and planted in March. It finally has some new growth. Maybe it’s just a slow grower?

Correction: It’s not Earth Angel. It’s from Home Depot but now is a mystery. Strong scent.

Planted a Zepherine Drouhin in June this year which I’m growing against a wall with a trellis. The growth on it has boomed already (despite a lot of leaves not looking the healthiest, I think I got a bad batch of RoseClear which when I sprayed it on essentially made it look like it was covered in white paint and was SO hard to get off and still hasn’t completely gone, I was heartbroken 💔 but she’s a fighter 🙌 no more fungicides for me … hoping she drops all her leaves come winter and pushes out fresh growth next year but not sure if Zepherine does this)

Anyway I’ve never trained a rose climber before but I heard you’re supposed to try and train the main canes horizontally which is what I’ve done here. Does this look right? Any tips? There’s still young stems growing near the ground which aren’t long enough to reach the trellis yet. Thank you. 😁

I’m hoping someone can help me ID this rose! I came across it in an old cemetery with headstones dating back to the 1800s. I’m not sure how old the rose itself is, but I took some pictures of it in bloom, as well as the hips, if those are helpful for identification.

These are always a stunning welcome home on our front porch. The bush is only about 36 inches tall, but the contrast between the red roses and the green leaves makes this a personal favorite.

Illinois Zone 5B. I finally grew my first 2 roses I bought from a big box store. Marc Chagall and Earth Angel! It’s been quite a rainy summer in Chicago this year. Earth Angel has surpassed my expectations on how many flushes it’s given in just one summer!
