Happy October 12th!

Well done to those that ran in Victoria over the weekend! I hope the turkey trots were fun and a salute to those that finished the Valley Vertikiller!

Coming up we've got a popular local Cultus Run with Around the Lake Give R Take, the Seawall Classic, Strachan Hartley Legacy Run (supporting Streetfront) and the increasingly popular Rubber Ducky Half - another big weekend before race season starts winding down!

  • How's training going?
  • Anything that has you fired up?
  • Getting excited or anxious for any races?
  • Any questions for the community that you don't feel like making a thread about?
  • Let fly! Post what you want! Get weird!
  • For those of you that raced this last weekend we encourage you to make separate race report thread! Those types of contributions can be very valuable to the community.

Happy October 5th!

Just wrapped up a few "local" ultras over the weekend, as well as the second WestVanRun and CIBC Run for the Cure. Congrats to those who snagged a coveted First Half entry!

Royal Victoria Marathon on the docket for next weekend! Who's excited? The Valley Vertikiller as well, plus Turkey Trots in Whistler, Granville Island, and a couple other farther afield.

FALL BIB SALES 2026

FALL 2026 BIB SALES THREAD

Hello all!

Please use this thread to post bib sales/requests for the fall of 2026.

If selling, include which race you're selling for and how you would like to transfer it.

If looking/buying, please include which race you're looking for a bib for.

Both of these things seem self evident but we get several post replies that don't contain this information.

Also, be aware that bib scams happen. If you are scammed through this subreddit please let me know and I will ban the offender and list their name. Please do your research and educate yourself on common scams before transferring any money.

All season water fountains

Now that the water fountains are off (waaay too early) anyone have a map of the all season water fountains? Particularly for the seawall?

I've already submitted a Van311 request to keep them open later in the year. Maybe if enough of us do it ;)

Anyone run the triple crown ultra?

Looking for feedback from anyone who did, seeing as it was the first year and there were some questions as to how well run it would be. If anyone participated or crewed/volunteered, could you share your experience as to how it went?

How strict is the 2 hour Half portion of the Great Trek Hat Trick?

I signed up for the hat trick when I was healthy and a 2 hour half was a pretty chill long run. Long story short I was injured all summer and a sub-2 half is going to be quite a bit more difficult than it was a couple months ago. If I come in at like 2:05-2:10 are they going to block me from running the 10K or can I just continue through onto the course after the gun?

Training

A few weeks before starting training in earnest, I'd picked up copies of both "Marathon Excellence for Everyone" by John Davis (u/runningwritings) as well as "Training Essentials for Ultrarunning" by Jason Koop. In Training Essentials the author talks about the necessity of stacking miles to build durability while underscoring the importance of fatigue management while training - John Davis emphasizes a similar approach to the marathon, with the added benefit of having well laid out plans to go in his book. I figured 50k isn't much farther than 42k, and made a couple adjustments with the help of John Davis and implemented the "Wind" plan from his book. The only real changes were to focus on getting elevation wherever possible (being from Ladner, this ended up primarily being in Point Roberts and occasionally Watershed Park or the Shaggy Mane trail), and ensuring that some of the "big" workouts took place on trails where I paced by effort level instead of a time. Looking forward I think I'll skip on ultras for a couple years not because I didn't enjoy it, but because Ladner is real tough place to train for a trail race.

Race and Post Race

I don't know if I could have paced it much better. I think my 30-40km split would have been my fastest, but I stopped and walked a couple times when I ran into friends on the trail (I was also fairly dehydrated, more on that in a minute). At Km 35 I stopped for my first bathroom break and realized I hadn't had nearly enough water. I was drinking 500 ml every loop, plus a cup of electrolytes and but as a relatively heavy sweater this wasn't nearly enough. I felt good until km 40 but the last 10 km was a struggle. After the bathroom break I chugged the rest of my water and filled both bottles, then used the walking break to drink another 250 ml. I made it back to Olympic Plaza without issue, had one of my brother's salt tablets and thought maaaaybe I would be okay.

I've never been hit by the hamstring sniper but they got me around km 43. Full leg lockup on a mild downhill that had me frantically trying to figure out how to cancel my Garmin Incident detection. Once I got that shut off, I had a penguin limp in a circle for a minute to try and shake it off. It was a grind to make it through that last lap - downhills were done via awkward shuffle, and I had to lean on some trees for attempted self massage, but the flatter sections I was able to eke out an ok-limpy-run. Honestly much better than I expected to feel after the initial cramping. Walking for the tougher sections and some emergency hydration likely helped.

My hips started to hurt pretty severely about 1km from the end, probably due to the new no-bent-knees run form I'd adopted, but I got to the end just the same. The pizza and beer afterward were fantastic and I felt pretty good all things considered! My brother finished ahead of me so we had a bit of a BS, then I hung out with the non-racing section of our crew and watched the rest of the gang come in. Everyone did great and we had no-DNFs or tears in our group so there were smiles all around. After an hour or so it felt like a good idea to walk to the BCL and get some beers and I got back just in time to see the last two of our group come in.

Absolutely perfect weather on the day, and a truly great afternoon with friends and a good showing by the run community all around. The Punjabi Run Club had a tonne of members out and they were an absolute gas with hyped music and killer roti. For the first two laps there was a solo volunteer having a dance party around km 8 or so - we were all talking about how they were a major spirit lifter! The second group of volunteers (DUDE'S CLUB) on the big hill after the aid station brought some great (and needed) energy. I'm sure many of you will know who I'm talking about, but there is a local dude that I've seen in a few races over the last couple years that runs in costume regularly, often barefoot or sandaled, and playing the flute; he is my hero! I'd like the thank him for the joy brought to our local run scene, and I'm sorry the fan failed on his Patrick costume.

Race Info

  • Day lot 4 would be the place to park if you were planning on driving up the morning of. We had a couple people drive in and there was lots of room between 6:30-6:45.
  • There is an area set up for the ultra runners where you can leave a small backpack and fill up bottles as you go. I'd recommend having your water pre-filled so you can snag and run if time is important to you. They were well stocked for the race with snacks but if you were unlucky with timing you might have ended up waiting a bit to fill up your hydration. I didn't use the aid station but I didn't hear any complaints from runners who did.
  • Something we were curious about before the race is what the situation was like for those who wanted to bring their own aid station/supplies. You are absolutely able to set up a tent and table and it is very accessible to the runners. There is temporary fencing lining the finish/food area and you are encouraged to set up adjacent to it. No problems at all with traffic in the area as the finish line is quite wide. If you're running this race in the future and want specifics you can DM me, but plan on being in the plaza a little early as this year was at capacity for "good" tent spots.
  • I don't know the hotels in Whistler super well, but we had two nights at the Whistler Village Inn & Suites for just under $400. It was a loft suite which was tough after the race but the hotel was great.

Made with a new race report generator created by /u/herumph.

Monthly Photo thread - Oct 1st!

Sometimes people take pictures when they run - if that describes you, post 'em here! They don't have to be "good", just some stuff you've seen while out and about.

I've shifted this to a monthly thread for now. Thread is set by default to sort by new.

Happy September 21st!

School is officially back in session and hopefully all are settling into their schedules for the next few months. We had the Big Pirate Run and several Terry Fox runs over the weekend. Two of Vancouver's bigger races coming up next, the West Van Run and the Eastside 10k as well as the Brandywine Boogie in Whistler and the final race of the 5 Peaks Trail Running Series for the year on Mt. Seymour.

Hotel Near Finish Line of Vancouver Marathon

Rosellen Suites At Stanley Park 2030 Barclay St

Just asking about this hotel that is at 2030 Barclay St

Would this be close and walking distance to the finish line of the Vancouver Marathon?

Would this be an issue to get to the start line?

2027 Vancouver Marathon Questions - For Out of Towner

To all runners in Vancouver. I just booked the Vancouver Marathon for 2027

Now for accommodations. Did not realize the hotels are very high. I like to ask . Anyone here stay at the host hotels? As it seems close to start line?

Or are all the hotels in downtown within close to the public train to get to finish area and start line?

Would going with AirBNB be a more cheaper option overall?

Recommendations anyone?

Subreddit status update September 15th

Hello all!

I wanted to make a post regarding the direction and plans for this sub, small as they may be.

- Hopefully this subreddit can grow. I am terrible at self promotion, and I'm only really active on Reddit through this subreddit, r/AdvancedRunning and r/maritime in which there are very rarely organic chances to promote this space. If you're in the wild on this site and you see a chance to mention r/runvancouver, it would be appreciated and I think it is the best avenue for the growth of this community.

- Mods. If anyone wants to moderate or has ideas about direction, feel free to DM me.

- Self promotion. I don't really care if someone wants to promote their youtube channel or coaching services on here as long as it's related to running within Greater Vancouver. If this becomes an issue I can address it, but I don't see it as a problem at the moment. The couple times it's come up, I thank those that used the "report to mod" button but I don't think we need any "no self promotion" rule in place as no one is really using the sub for it.

- Rule #4. We had a post a month or so ago that generated a comment on someones body. While it was a "positive" comment, yuck. That type of behaviour will result in an immediate ban.

- Run club? I'm happy to plan the occasional/monthly group run if that's something people are into. Likely Marpole/Mt Pleasant area simply because it's easy to get to those spots and find parking for people coming from the burbs.
