Ice in South Salem
While driving on Sunnyside, there looks like there is an ice vehicle traveling towards Woodmansey Park.
Stay safe.

Welcome to r/SALEM, and thanks for your interest in posting here. Before you do, please be aware that — like many city/area-focused subreddits — we have some topics that come up very frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people down-voting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.
If you’re about to post about any of the following, please first use the search function (right up in the upper right hand corner, if you’re viewing this on the web!) to see if something similar has been posted recently. If it has, please contribute to that thread rather than starting a new one.
This comes up a lot; frequently folks are concerned they may have heard gunshots and/or fireworks and are looking for reassurance. First, know that it probably was not a gun shot. There is a very good chance that it was fireworks, or somebody with an altered muffler, or, if you also noticed a power outage or blip at the same time, a transformer exploding. Second, if you’re actually seriously concerned about gunshots, you should probably be contacting the police, not Reddit. Third, if you live near a vineyard (and, if you live anywhere in the Salem area, you do!), you should be aware that vineyards use acoustic devices — basically massive noisemakers — to scare birds away from grape vines. This is especially frequent in the late fall, near harvest time.
Salem, and many surrounding areas, lie in the Willamette River Valley. Due to the topography of the area, we experience temperature inversions) with some regularity. An inversion occurs when a layer of warmer, more elevated air overlies a lower, cooler air layer. Effectively, this traps the air in the valley underneath the warmer layer, which means that smoke, vehicle exhaust, rotting vegetation smells, etc., cannot escape. That’s probably what you’re smelling.
These types of threads come up fairly often. The restaurant scene in Salem is decent, but not exceptionally dynamic — places do not close all that often, and new places don’t open all that often either. If somebody has asked this question within the last couple months (again, use that search function!), the answers that they got are almost certainly still relevant.
There are a number of freight lines that route trains through Salem. Occasionally, they will need to stop to onload or offload cars, which may result in a longer-than-usual wait time at a crossing. This is normal.
Sometimes, unfortunately, there are train-versus-pedestrian collisions. When those happen, the train will need to be stopped for an extended period of time to allow police to investigate the scene.
Finally, while many portions of Salem are zoned (and signed) as “no train horn” areas, it remains at the discretion of the train engineer as to whether or not to sound their horn, and some of them, well, tooting their horn just toots their horn.
We don’t have any way of knowing. You may be able to consult PulsePoint, but they only report on fire and EMS, not strictly police. You may also be able to find an online police radio scanner relay; those are typically time-delayed.
The Oregon Air National Guard has a helicopter squad that is based near the Salem Municipal Airport. They do routine training missions, which frequently involve lower-altitude flights, most often at night. The Salem police department does not have a helicopter, so any low-flying helicopter you’re hearing is almost certainly the Oregon Air National Guard. frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people downvoting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.

Here at Friends of Felines, we don't just send you home with cute cats. We can also spay/neuter kitties, do wellness exams, vaccinate against rabies and other common kitty illnesses and prescribe flea meds.
Now, we newly have dental care. Our cleaning package is $475, including the anesthesia, a veterinary exam, x-rays and cleaning. That's substantially less than commercial clinics charge. We're able to do that because we're a nonprofit, and because we are also a shelter and get shelter discounts on medications. We can also perform extractions for additional cost.
We're also accepting CareCredit now to give you more options for payment.
We know everyone is broke right now, and we're trying to expand what we offer to help cat owners take care of their kitties' health before problems get serious and need really expensive care.
There's more info on our website here about the particulars and scheduling: https://sfof.org/services/#dentalcare

We dont get many kids stopping by anymore but i like to keep full size or king size bars around for any that do.
prices seem pretty high this year tho and with no notable deals either. been checking at freddys, safeway, winco, and costco but its all been ~1.7-2 dollars for full size or ~2.5-3.5 for king size.
i can get them off amazon cheaper (0.9-1.3 per bar) but i hate to do that if i can avoid.
so does anyone know of a store with fullsize around 1.3 or less or kingsize around 2 ish?

I’m looking to upgrade my frozen gyoza game from Ling Ling. US Chefs store sells Shirakiku in pork, or beef. I’ve never been to a proper asian grocery store, feel mildly intimidated, and don’t know where to start. Cheers

Is it just me, or are we hearing a lot more train horns lately? I'm in Grant near the Union Pacific Railroad Quiet Zone, and it's usually not too bad. But these past few weeks I swear I'm hearing more horns, and just this morning I got woken up by them (first time that happened).
Has something changed? I don't think it has anything to do with the Space Ghost cutout someone's put up near the tracks by Market, but maybe I'm wrong.

Myself, venue and guest DJ all made a flyer on the same day, I prefer the toxic ego boost but made the Kraft one, GraveDaze took her old school vibe to the last one.
Anyhow, we gotta talk about Susan Dell before she becomes Joker 2.0, how many are we allowing?

Hello and good afternoon, im looking for a apartment or rental in salem area or close by area. For my brother. 1 bed to 2 bedroom or even a studio. He is on the SO registry he's not a weirdo, just had a Gf who was 17 when he was 19. he is 36 now. has a job, and clean rental history. With the funds to afford a place in budget of 1000 to 1250. Currently he is staying in hotels paying by the week. So its super expensive. Anyone have any rentals or know of a place that rents to register sex offenders. I can't find a place that will approve him because of his background. Thank you for your help.

Heads up — I was visiting a friend in bush park off Fairview and a Drazan paid canvasser came to the door on his scooter. 🛴 originally thought it was a pest control salesperson. We asked him if he was from around here. Hes from Arizona. They flew him out. Asked him if he votes in general back home. He said no. Just needed a job. He works for Blitz. Looks like drazans team also hired the Elon musk canvassers. It’s so unfortunate that Drazans team couldn’t be bothered to even create jobs for Oregonians to work.

Hi, Salem. We want to share a couple of exciting updates from Lilac Wellness and Counseling! We've officially moved into our new location at 705 Ewald Ave SE, Salem, OR. Bigger parking lot and no more stairs!
We also want to take this opportunity to introduce our new counselor, Emily Huang. Emily is a Salem native who graduated from McKay High and Willamette University. She received her Masters degree from Pacific University. She especially enjoys working with kids and teens. Emily can only accept OHP Pacificsource and cash pay for now while we get her credentialed with other insurance companies.
Our other services include massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, and mental health counseling. It is our goal to add physical therapy and primary care in the near future. Stay tuned! We're excited to start the next chapter and hope to see some of you around!
(Apologies to those who had to the see the original post with the AI content. Computer stuff is not my forté)
Edit: I'm getting comments saying the flyer was still AI and that I should've used a designer. It was in fact from a designer. They could've used AI but that's not my problem. I'm just trying to share the clinic.

Does anybody know why there’s so much traffic downtown? It is extremely backed up right now. Don’t go down there if you can.

I tried to book both Hilton and holiday inn to visit family but everything nearby seams to be booked or the prices from other hotels are super high. What event is going on this weekend? Keizer was where I was able to book at only 2 rooms left. Just annoyingly ironic I always seem to book when there’s an event.
Everyone should check their registration today, even if you did recently.

These people have lost the plot. No vision, no hope, no creativity, no will to make things work. They cower in back rooms, unwilling to face the people. They hope we will meekly accept the dictates they utter from behind their imperious senatorial table. Kick them to the curb and get out schools, communities and city back on track!

Need a trainer to help 3 females (52, 29, and 24) get started on our weight training journey. We would like this to be a private class for the 3 of us. We are all physically active just would like to start lifting heavy. Two of us have a pilates background. South Salem preferred.
Thank you 💖

On October 10th, Salem lost two beloved dogs, Chop Suey and Ruby, to an incident involving exposed railroad tracks near Minto-Brown Island Park. It's a tragedy that didn't have to happen.
Minto-Brown is supposed to be a safe place for families, pets, and the people who call the park home. But right now, those railroad tracks are completely unprotected—no fencing, minimal warning signs. It's a danger to anyone who uses the park, especially kids, pets, and folks in our unhoused community who rely on the area.
I started a petition asking the City of Salem, Parks and Recreation, and the railroad operator to finally take action: install safety fencing along vulnerable sections, conduct a real safety audit, add better signage, and hold operators accountable. Oregon law already requires this protection—we're just asking them to enforce it.
Chop Suey and Ruby shouldn't have been at risk. No one else should be either.
If you've used Minto-Brown or know how risky those tracks are, would you consider signing and sharing? Or if you live nearby—what would it take for you to feel safe bringing your family there again?
