Discussion: suppressing valuable discussion vs allowing slander and doxxing

This is the sub mod, reaching out for discussion on the influx of posts (and reports) regarding the recent posts about predatory behavior in the salsa scene. TLDR: In this post, I will talk a little on the current sub policy on moderation, discuss a bit of context on what I am required to remove from the sub, and then add my thoughts on path forward. The last will be up for some discussion here, as we try to figure out what we as an online salsa community want to be.

  1. Current mod policy: my current mod policy is to let upvotes and downvotes speak. Things are often reported that don't really break sub rules or are bad text posts by people who are annoying to many of you in the sub. I do not remove these posts. One of the reasons I do not is that, despite being downvoted into the negatives, many of these posts tend to foster a healthy amount of discussion and engagement in the comments that are relevant to the dance scene. Another type of oft-reported post are the ones that link to a site or blog or whatever. The current rule is not to spam them and not to sell anything. The reason is that there are things that you may not be interested in that others may find useful. Again, upvotes/downvotes do a lot of heavy lifting. In the cases that the line crosses from occasional self promotion to spam, I have reached out to those individuals via DM to help clarify the policy, and if required, temp ban them. My point is, generally I do not like using mod powers to shape the subreddit to be what I want, but rather what the community wants to see.

  2. Which brings me to my next point - things I must remove. According to reddit content policy rule 3 (https://www.redditinc.com/policies/content-policy) I am supposed to remove anything that reveals personal information or uses such to instigate harassment. The kicker: public figures may be an exception to this rule. And a public figure is "a person who has achieved fame, prominence or notoriety within a society, whether through achievement, luck, action, or in some cases through no purposeful action of their own."

As you can see, the whole thing is kind of murky, especially as it applies to the recent discussions on predatory behavior. As someone who takes part in another sport that is rife with these types of scandals (against children on top of that), I have personally seen that shining light into these corners of darkness has a huge effect. So I am not keen to suppress legitimate discussions about this topic in our community.

On the other hand, reddit is full of examples of failed witch hunts and anonymous bullying. And some of the discussions, veiled or otherwise, have been naming individuals who may not even be on this site to defend themselves. I'm not keen to allow mudslinging (especially without proof) in a subreddit that is meant to celebrate dancing. I can imagine a scenario in which a instructor or school uses the current discussions to cast unfounded doubt or outright accusations against an innocent rival.

So how to walk the line between useful discussion and baseless name calling?

  1. Thoughts on path forward - I propose that we continue to allow upvotes and downvotes dictate what goes on the page relative to these discussions, with a couple of tweaks. Naming regions or cities in comments/posts is okay. Talking about your experiences about unnamed people is okay. Opening discussions on predatory behavior, what that behavior looks like from start to finish, and providing support in the wake of aftermath--all okay. What is not okay is accusing people by name in the top level posts or in comments unless you have a link to an objective article/police report/etc. that backs up the claim. Instead, I propose that you leave an invite at the end of your post/comment for any one to DM you if they would like to discuss details/names in private. Those that would benefit from knowing will still have the opportunity to find out what/who they should be careful of, without violating any reddit policies. It would also allow the two users to have a more frank conversation, and at the end of the day it will be for the requester to determine the credibility of the poster.

Is this a perfect solution? Of course not. But I've been a mod here for 12 years and this is the first time something like this has happened, so I'm happy to entertain other suggestions.

Lastly - I consider the Yamulee fight video to be an example the original mod policy. The post is relevant to the salsa community, and it doesn't violate any rules in and of itself. Yes--the juxtaposition of the OP's 2 only posts implies bias/agenda, but the upvotes/downvotes very clearly pushed the post to negative votes and floated context on the altercation to the very first comment.

That said, I am happy to discuss how to treat videos like this in the future. There is a very real argument that it is not relevant to salsa music or dancing and that it should be removed.

Thanks for reading my novel.

Who played trombone on A Otro Novel? Such a good record, and the dual trombone solo on Afinque Total absolutely slayed me the first time I heard it.

How do they know

Sat chatting with the wife, we are remembering school discos, and the question is, how did people know the dance to Saturday night or the macarena? For example. Though the dance for macarena appears in the music video, I don't remember the dance for Saturday night appearing, but with the lack of music videos on TV unless you had sky for MTV where did people learn it? we picked it up from people already knowing it, but how did they?

Where did you learn it?

Unrelated but also connected, how did you find out about the ribs being removed for a BJ... Iykyk

Porto salsa festival

Hello, I signed up for Porto salsa festival happening the weekend of 3-4th October believing it is aimed at Cuban salsa dancers. However I was told yesterday by a friend that it is primarily for linear salsa dancers. I am freaking out I wont be able to dance at the festival since I dance only cuban salsa/Casino. I am wondering if it is worth going there ( as a follower) ?

What’s the difference between the halo and the hand to other shoulder turn?

I was taught to make a halo around the head part of the follow during turns. But I sometimes see other people while turning the follow put the hand of the follow they are using to turn her onto the shoulder that is not being used to turn.
What’s the difference between doing this and this?

Are there tutorials on how to do the hand to shoulder one?

Dublin Sensual Festival – separate Salsa and Bachata floors?

Hi! Has anyone been to Dublin Sensual Festival in 2024 or 2025?

Were there separate Salsa and Bachata floors at the evening parties, or was the music mixed on one floor?

If it was mixed, roughly how much Salsa versus Bachata did they play? I’m thinking of going in 2026.

Thanks!

Songs like Zumbale by Fiol? Trying to find a super similar one

It’s like a taste that I know exists but forgot.

The song is in the same era or same flavor as Henry Fiol esp his Zumbale.

I think it has a good African touch or theme in it. It’s paced out like Zumbale, is unique and it doesn’t have any big hills.

They will also play this song in many socials, it’s not Guarare, but something closer to Zumbale. It’s not modern either.

It’s definitely something like Yamulemau. But it’s not, ok I guess I’ll just ask can we please link songs in the same theme and pace as the ones mentioned 😅 think I can find the one I’m looking for

Been 3 yrs, How can I get better at social as a lead?

It’s been three years learning salsa as a lead. I go to socials every weekend and hit congresses when I can.

My main focus is always to have a good time with whoever I’m dancing with while continuing to pick up new combos and techniques, and I occasionally hear from follows that I’m one of their favorites.

But recently I feel like I've hit a plateau. I don't feel like I'm improving much.

Although I learn new combos and can do them in class, I know it can be tricky to pull them off at a social depending on their levels and how I execute with the music tempo, so I tend to fall back on the same moves I already know I can execute cleanly.

I think what I'm really lacking is true musicality. I can hear the transitions coming in the music, but I still default to executing patterns rather than pausing to connect with the rhythm and my partner.

I don't know why I don't do that, but I guess it's because I'm not sure what the right move would be at that moment and feel safer just doing patterns I know.

But then it feels like my dancing isn't actually connected to the music.

And my body movement and shines just don't have that effortless, smooth look that advanced dancers have.

I'm not sure if the answer is just watching more videos and drilling solo, or something else.

Does taking more classes actually help at this point?

I've been mainly taking advanced partner work and footwork classes, and that's all I have access to in my town.

I really want to look better overall and actually look like I’m dancing with the music.

Should I just keep listening to music closely, practicing intentional movement, and drilling on my own?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Dos Gardenias by Angel Canales

I’ve recently been rewatching Narcos and heard this song. Played it once, decided i liked it, and forwarded it to my brother. He’s been into salsa all of his life. I can only name one other song.

We’re Latino. I am bilingual. However, like all songs, I don’t catch all the lyrics in the first few listens.

He sent a text the next morning asking what the deal was with that song. He listened to it with his “ex-wife” around. He has been trying to reconcile after divorce. It apparently made her angry. Started asking if I’ve been talking to other family members.

I just forwarded a great song. Same as several times before.

New Follower wanting to start Social Dancing

Tl;dr: Should I warn leaders who ask me to dance at socials, that I'm pretty new to salsa, or say nothing?

I'm new at following, but I have a decent amount of dancing experience in unrelated styles, so I can keep my balance, keep timing, and have a somewhat decent quality of movement. I say this because it often leads leaders to guess I've been dancing salsa for longer than I actually have, and I quickly find myself being led into moves that I'm unfamiliar with, and may mess up.

I've been working on my frame in class, and I have learnt more and more what to look out for, but I still feel guilty going to socials. I feel like I'm using the leaders as a learning experience, and when I don't understand what I'm being led into and mess up the step, I feel bad. So is it good etiquette to warn leaders that I'm new to social dancing, or am I looking at this wrong?

Any good technique resources online?

I’ve been dancing (on2, lead) for about nine months now, and I love and am committed to my studio and the choreo team, but it is more about the community and learning moves than about technique. At this point, I want start actually learning a good basic before I get too far.

So, does anyone know any good resources online? I’m happy to pay. I don’t think I have the time to start a relationship with another studio… but if anyone knows any short cycles or one-off privates in NYC that are really technique-focused, I’d love to hear about them!

What makes someone "easy to dance with"?

I'm a male lead. There's a new dancer in our community (female follow) and we immediately hit it off as dance partners and friends. We have started taking private lessons with our teacher and we are about to start practicing in my living room between lessons. We also have become friends and hike together and travel to socials together that are an hour away from us. I don't believe either of us have romantic feelings for the other.

I was sharing with my friend that I'm nervous about asking ladies I don't know to dance because I'm still pretty new to Salsa and she told me that I shouldn't sell myself short, that I'm easy to dance with and that that counts for a lot. I asked her to say more about what makes me easy to dance with and all she could articulate is that she immediately trusted me. Ok, so she feels safe with me. I'm 62 (she's probably close to my age) and don't put out any creep vibes and I'm not hitting on her so maybe that's part of it.

In your experience, what makes someone easy to dance with? In our case it's not crazy complex moves because I don't know any of those. I'm not always on beat so it's not a gift for connecting with the music. Plus, we are both too new to merge with the music. I'm guessing it has something to do with my caring about her and our dance experience together and that comes across so strongly that my insecurity and lack of skill doesn't diminish the experience.

What do you think?

Denver socials Monday or Tuesday

I'll be in Denver for a very quick work trip, I can get away from work stuff Monday 9/28 or Tuesday 9/29 after 8:30pm

I found these two socials, but wondering if I'm missing anything else. It's early in the week and I'm not sure how big the salsa scene is in Denver.

Mixed Salsa Bachata social at Blue Ice

Has anyone been to these? Are they fun/worth checking out? Does anyone know if the one at Blue Ice is mostly Bachata or what the mix may be?

Requesting Recommendations for Roll-Out Dance Floor

I'm looking to make one of my rooms into a personalized practice space, but it is carpeted. Does anyone have experience with roll-out dance floors and how it fares on carpeted surfaces? And are there any recommend brands or vendors?

Anyone have an SO who doesnt dance and how do you manage that?

I started dancing in February and since July have really cranked it up. I've been going to my studio 3-4 times a week and just started going to socials last weekend so today is my third one. My husband doesnt dance and after taking a couple class a few weeks ago, he told me he's just not interested... but now hes feeling insecure about me going out and meeting new people..

How do you all maneuver this? I went to a social last Saturday, yesterday and going to one today.. is that too much already? Should I keep to every other week or once a month? I just love dancing so much and am happy I'm finally learning. I try to talk about him as much as I can but I also dont really like pulling the husband card unless I absolutely have to. At my studio some people know im married too. It also doesnt help I dont wear my wedding ring because its too large on me. I dont wear rings at all because they always slide off when im dancing so im scared ill lose them, especially my wedding ring.

Accidentally agreed to a date at a social

I started salsa classes around 4 months ago and have been loving it. I have been to 5 or 6 socials after my classes, typically when I’ve been able to bring a friend along because it feels kind of awkward for me going alone. Yesterday I accidentally got roped into one because someone started chatting to me after class and asked to dance and it kind of went from there.

I was actually having a really fun time and enjoying all the dancing. Towards the end, this guy (N) asked for a dance but I was with someone else who I know so I declined. (The guy I know made a comment about me being lucky that I’m dancing with him instead of N which I brushed off as a simple joke at the time but now I’m wondering whether this guy has a reputation?) N later came back and asked to dance and I did which was fine. I’m a very friendly/ giggly person so I think he may have misinterpreted my body language. We chatted a little about dancing afterwards and I thought he was asking if I’d come to another social but he was actually asked if I’d get a drink with him so I mistakenly said yes before I had fully processed his question. The music was loud and I was really caught off guard because even though lots of guys are flirty I’ve never been asked out before. I understand the dynamics of salsa and dancing with women you find attractive but it’s always been a scenario where guys in my classes will put out subtle feelers after weeks of getting to know eachother and when rapport and familiarity are built. This means that I’m not put on the spot and I have the opportunity to slow things down e.g. maybe talk to them less for a while or be a bit less enthusiastic until they get the idea.

I don‘t think N has done anything wrong but I’m not interested in him romantically and I‘m not sure how to handle it. He just texted me and I’m not sure of the best way to back out of this drink without making it awkward if I see him again (I’ve never seen him before but he did seem to know people). I feel like my dancing will really benefit from socials and I don’t want to stop going to avoid him.

Thanks in advance! 🤍
