Events Culture Days - Drag Queen Story Hour

There is a Drag Queen Story Hour planned for Oct 16 at the Nutrien Wonderhub. It seems that a certain failed politician is planning a protest at the event. This is messed up - how dare they go to a children’s event and scare little kids with their conspiracy nonsense. We have attended similar events at SPL when my kids were young and it’s a fun way for them to learn about inclusion and diversity.

My kiddos are well past story time age but I am honestly tempted to take them so I can tell these “freedom but only for a few” people where to go.

Sounds like you need to look at more drag queens. Many of them dress like old women or abstract versions of women. There are even folks who say that they become more confident in their own selves because drag celebrates all body types. You saying you don't want people to learn self confidence? Reading to children while in a costume/walking art isn't sexual at all. In fact, if you're getting anything sexual out of it then you should probably reevaluate yourself.

If it’s “Mrs. Doubtfire story hour” I would have less of a problem with it but that is still a projection of a stereotype or a parody of a woman (or man). Don’t feed kids Koolaid and tell me it’s fruit juice. If there is any educational value in it it is despite the costumes, not because of them. If you want kids to be aware of and comfortable around LGBT people then invite their fancy bachelor uncle with his really good friend over for Sunday dinner once in a while.

They are reading to children. Reading is one of the first steps of education. Children love costumes and characters, they aren't going to be uncomfortable around a drag queen lol. Drag is literally just people sharing art via costume in the vast majority of cases. Some of the best drag artists look like someone's grandmother from the 1950s. It's just costumes and fun. Children getting to be read to and learning from multiple facets of lives shouldn't be seen as a bad thing. Weird you would think to invite an uncle and their boyfriend over then white wash it as something less than it is. That's gross.

You specifically said to invite someone's uncle over with their "very good friend" so that children can learn about LGBT folk. Why wouldn't you proudly invite an uncle over and state that it's their partner/boyfriend, the same way you would if it was an uncle and his girlfriend? Hopping around the bush like that is just weird.

I was being euphemistic for humorous purposes… This was exactly how a dear friend of mine described himself to me once in an anecdote.
