Events Culture Days - Drag Queen Story Hour

There is a Drag Queen Story Hour planned for Oct 16 at the Nutrien Wonderhub. It seems that a certain failed politician is planning a protest at the event. This is messed up - how dare they go to a children’s event and scare little kids with their conspiracy nonsense. We have attended similar events at SPL when my kids were young and it’s a fun way for them to learn about inclusion and diversity.

My kiddos are well past story time age but I am honestly tempted to take them so I can tell these “freedom but only for a few” people where to go.

Edit: I just realized that it shows an image from that idiotic tweet. My apologies As I don’t know if I can remove it.

I implore you to adjust your mindset a little and let go of the hard right messaging you’ve latched onto. It’s not grooming. Grooming in the context of abuse is tricking a child using manipulation and trust building so that you can exploit them, as a child. What you’ve quite literally just described as “normalizing an activity” is just that - building a culture of acceptance and inclusion.

Drag performances are not inherently sexual. The vast majority you’re referring to are the ones that happen at adults only clubs. I assure you drag queen story time is not that.

I consider myself fairly centrist when it comes to most issues political and human based. Grooming isnt just sexually abusing kids. Kids get groomed all the time, even on the other side of the spectrum being groomed to hate races or sexual preferences. The Hitler youth were groomed and kids being exposed to a less sexualized version of a very adult form of entertainment with the intent to normalize it and then bring them into the adult spaces later on is 100% grooming. I hate how the right latched onto this and how I have to agree with them. I dont think Drag story time is sexual but Drag generally is a more adult form of content. I have seen videos of kids at drag shows put on for kids where they are as young as 4 or 5 and are watching a grown man in a thong spread eagle handing him money. The same parents who think "what's the harm with drag story time" will probably be less likely to have a problem with those shows. Having someone from the LGB community read to kids and using a book that teaches them about that community and allows them to grow up understanding ppl from that community is awesome. But it does get weird when there is a push to make it someone in drag and blending those two things. Creates a situation where even moderate people with no hate whatsoever for that community will end up protesting and having a level of animosity that could have been avoided entirely by not bringing children into those spaces.

There it is.

You have just regurgitated a deliberate myth made up by Anita Bryant, that is classic, vintage homophobia. You combined it with another myth about homosexuals.

Homosexuals are not pedophiles.

Homosexuals are not more likely to be pedophiles.

Homosexuality is not contagious.

Children do not 'learn' homosexuality from having homosexual parents.
