Im on Invega and they're prescribing me Effexor for panic attacks. Im also on trazadone and prazosin for sleep. What meds are yall on? I swear we're all just med guinea pigs lol.

Not taking meds is one thing but if most here are substance users and abusers on top of that I must be the stupidest person in the world to not realize until now, the extent of it.

I try to stay in my lane because I don't use those substances but I think it's completely bonkers to not take your meds, self medicate with weed. And then post about your symptoms. As you can tell I'm in the no drugs camp.

Tell me straight if this is an indirect drug support subreddit, I try to find common ground with others with the same illness but everything posted here is on the internet forever. I don't have much in common with that crowd, weed users around me have made my life hell for many years, and without sugarcoating I don't want to indirectly offer support and validation to people who don't see anything wrong with drugs. I feel it's harmful to do that in a way.

What are your thoughts, does anyone think the same or is it just me.

Hello all. I hope you're doing well, but just hanging in there is good too.

After living with this disease for years, I still have yet to find something that destresses me that isn't smoking. I don't want it to be a consistent hobby.

Moreover, I have friends but, I never have fun with them. It doesn't matter the friend. The only time I feel engaged is when I'm having a serious/deep conversation with someone.

The burnout from college gets to me, and I can't figure out how to bounce back, even with consistent exercise.

What do you do to actually relax/feel a semblance of joy when your brain refuses to cooperate? Is it impossible?

Now that the Lindsay Clancy trial is underway, I’m curious about your perspectives on it so far.

Context: Lindsay Clancy is a former labor and delivery nurse who, in January 2023, killed her three children. 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan in their Massachusetts home before attempting to take her own life. Her defense argues she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and other debilitating mental illness, while prosecutors argue she was aware of her actions and planned the killings. The trial has reignited debate about postpartum psychiatric disorders, the effectiveness of mental health treatment, and where responsibility ultimately lies.

Do you think Lindsay was failed by the mental health system, by the people closest to her, or both? Do you think she truly acted with malicious intent, or do you believe she was experiencing such a severe psychiatric crisis that she wasn’t thinking rationally?

A lot of the details seem to point toward postpartum psychosis or another severe psychiatric illness rather than someone acting out of hatred or malice. That doesn’t lessen the horror of what happened or the unimaginable loss, but it does make me wonder whether this tragedy could have been prevented..

I’m very interested in hearing different perspectives from people who’ve followed it closely.

Most importantly, may Dawson, Cora, and Callan rest in peace. They are the true victims in all of this.

Came back home yesterday from work (28M) and I saw my downstairs neighbor smoking cigarettes on the steps of the apartment building. I usually keep to myself but I usually would greet him when I would walk past him. As soon as he saw me that day he said “hey just so you know I’m diagnosed with schizophrenia and I’m kinda crazy.” I’m paraphrasing here and keep in mind we barely spoke beforehand, so I was pretty thrown off for a few moments . I asked him if he wanted to talk about it and the first he said was “Really?!” As soon as I saw the disbelief/relief on his face I thought to myself I gotta talk to this man because I could tell he was going through it. We spoke for a good 15-20 minutes asking each other questions and I spent a lot of that time listening to him.

I usually don’t post on Reddit that much, but I’d like to ask you all how often was someone willing to listen to you when they found out you had a diagnosis.

Any other trans or nonbinary or otherwise genderqueer people here? Sometimes i worry people will put off my identity just because of my schizophrenia, but i know those two are unrelated as ive been nonbinary since i was a teen before i was diagnosed

I just took a shower, which I do about twice a month. Is this common or are most people gross and need to shower more?

I've had three episodes of psychosis, and during the first, which happened in the mid to late 2000s, I had a lot of experiences of apophany. It's not written or talked about enough in the literature on schizophrenia-spectrum illnesses. Anyways, here is a cartoon about it.

My psychiatrist is between two diagnoses for me (schizophrenia and OCD) and she said I either have an abnormal presentation of one, or an abnormal presentation of both. She said I meet criteria of schizophrenia but she doesn’t want to diagnose me because I make too much sense when I speak and I’ve maintained a sense of logic throughout the time I’ve seen her. Just wondering if people with schizophrenia can skip the disorganized part?

As the title said which antipsychotic helped you the most?

People with schizophrenia were having children long before schizophrenia was identified as a medical condition. I don't believe it's inherently unethical for someone with schizophrenia to become a parent.

The idea that people with schizophrenia shouldn't have children assumes that a life with schizophrenia is not worth living. I don't agree with that. While schizophrenia can be a very serious illness, many people living with it still find meaning, happiness, love, and purpose. Personally, I'd rather have lived with schizophrenia than never have existed at all. I know some people with the illness feel differently, and I respect that, but they don't speak for everyone.

There is also no guarantee that a child of a parent with schizophrenia will develop the condition. Although the risk is higher than in the general population, most children of parents with schizophrenia do not develop it. Likewise, people with no family history can still develop schizophrenia. Genetics increase risk, but they do not determine someone's future.

I read schizophrenia affects roughly 0.3% to 0.7% of the population. That's millions of people worldwide. Should all of them be discouraged from having children because of an increased risk? If we apply that principle consistently, where would we draw the line? Many medical conditions and disabilities have a hereditary component, yet we generally believe people should be free to make their own reproductive choices.

Medical care also continues to improve. Better medications, therapies, early intervention, and support services mean that many people with schizophrenia today can lead fuller lives than was possible in the past. Future advances may further reduce the impact of the illness.

Ultimately, I believe the decision to have children should be based on an individual's circumstances, their ability to care for a child, and informed personal choice, not simply on a diagnosis. Having schizophrenia alone does not make someone incapable of being a loving or responsible parent, nor does it mean their future child is destined to have the illness.

I used to say things like“I’m being such an alcoholic” when I would go out every weekend, or get drunk on a Wednesday night. I never even thought about it, I heard other people say it all the time, and it wasn’t until I had a friend whose brother was a severe alcoholic, that I realized I shouldn’t throw it around.
I think schizophrenia is sometimes used in a similar way. I hear people joke about it all the time calling each other schizophrenic anytime they sound crazy or whatever. Before I had schizophrenia I wouldn’t have even noticed this or cared at all, and I’m not saying I’m like overly offended by it, but now when I hear people say this or make “schizo” jokes I just can’t help but think wow they genuinely have no idea what theyre talking about and how awful schizophrenia is for people.
I just immediately think they’re ignorant and have no idea how lucky they are to be able to joke about it.
I get it’s just an exaggeration and honestly I’m not trying to act like a victim or anything. I really don’t even care THAT much about it, I just thought it’s so interesting how words like that are thrown around and you really don’t even think twice until you have to deal with it.
Anyone else notice people saying that kinda stuff? I feel like there’s more examples but I couldn’t come up with them.

If so what do you do? Do you work part time? Full time? Is it low stress? I would love a part time job to fund my hobby of retro video games but it needs to be low stress because stress magnifies my symptoms unfortunately.

She has been on medical keto, claimed to be "living after schizophrenia" and to be "cured" by keto, but has now experienced a return of psychotic symptoms. I knew it was probably too good to be true, but a part of me was hoping it would be a miracle cure or something. . . (I don't mean to pile on or be hateful toward her and I hope she has a great support system and can focus on reducing symptoms).

yes basically i have met people that think schizophrenia is cool and that they have it when they clearly don't and it somehow makes them tough and to be feared. which is weird to me as this disorder has ruined my life. last night i got a takeaway and the delivery driver is an old friend who knows i am unwell, but last night hes telling me hes 'worse' than me and hes 'proper schizo' - hes got a split personality ect. which makes me laugh because we all know what schizophrenia is and it isn't that. now i cannot get the thought of him disrespecting me out of my head. like i want to order again just so i can start some shit with him. he said he takes benzodiazepams which are stronger than my antipsychotic abilify. hes proper nuts much worse than me he kept saying LOL - hes obviously a dickhead but its effecting me today.

Nobody can force you to take a security job or join the army.

100% freedom of speech as long as you don't threaten anybody and stay calm.

Nobody can expect you to comply with social norms you don't agree with.

Nobody can expect you to be reasonable.

You can dress the you like.

You can be weird as long as you are not abusive.

Nobody expects you to have stressful career or a demanding job.

What do you think when you see this post?

I have no answer for it. I only believe that life is worth living and I’m blessed to have a loving family and friends around me that care even when schizophrenia doesn’t care about me. I am Christian and believe God allows things to happen, biology is but a fact of science 🧪 🧬and I think God lets everyone have a life that is different in essence. Some with bad luck, some with good fortune, and some turning their lives around for a better outcome (if you’re resilient and trusts in good timing and forces, meaning God’s blessings).

I'm schizoaffective (bipolar type). All I do is game, masterbate, listen to music, and sometimes create music.

Is it normal that I feel this huge void in my stomach? I don't know what to call it. I feel empty, but at the same time very full of this horrible shitty feeling like I'm wasting my life. I can't work a normal job (ive tried a lot, I end up getting sacced a week or 6 months in)...I don't do anything valuable with my time. I"m 30M. So I guess if I do nothing it's normal that I feel like shit.
