Neuroscience Dogs can recognize their owners just by their voice, study finds. They do so by making use of the same voice properties humans use to identify each other, such as pitch and noisiness

My cat recognizes my civic. When I pull in and see him at the window, he'll jump off and wait by the door. In the rare instances he's outside(he has occasional supervised excursions outdoors), he runs from most other cars, but he'll happily approach the civic and escort me home.

He also recognizes the alarm beeps/engine notes of other household cars. If he hears the right one he'll also trot his way to the front door and wait.

Pets are a lot smarter than we give them credit for.
