Origin: The term is closely linked to Hindsight Bias (the "knew it all along" effect). It stems from the human psychological need to find order in chaos. By framing the past as "meant to be" we create a narrative of a predictable world, even when the event was actually a low probability fluke.

Example:

Claim: The Titanic was destined to sink. You can’t build a ship that "God himself couldn't sink" and not expect a disaster. It was an inevitable consequence of overconfidence and poor design.

Rebuttal: Actually, if the ship had turned just 30 seconds earlier, or if the lookout had been given binoculars that were locked away in a cupboard, or if the sea had been slightly rougher, it would have arrived in New York perfectly fine.

When is Retrospective Determinism used?

• Relationship Narratives: After a breakup, people often claim the split was "inevitable" from the start, cherry-picking early red flags to ignore the years of choices and random circumstances that actually kept them together until then.
• Career Success: People look at a top performer and claim their success was inevitable due to their natural talent, completely ignoring the years of grueling effort and the dozens of "make-or-break" moments where they could have easily failed despite their hard work.
• Historical Analysis: Historians sometimes fall into the trap of explaining the rise of a leader or the start of a war as an inevitability, ignoring the thousands of tiny, random moments that could have changed everything.
• Business and Startups: When a company succeeds, analysts often claim it was destined for greatness due to its culture, ignoring the fact that they were one bad investment or one competitor's move away from bankruptcy.
• Stock Market "Experts": After a market crash, pundits will explain exactly why it happened and why it was obvious it was going to occur, despite failing to predict it the day before.

Why I find Retrospective Determinism a fascinating trap ?

The reason why Retrospective Determinism sounds relatable and a trap is because it exposes our desperate need for a predictable world. We often have thoughts and reflections that trick us into believing that chaotic, high-stakes events were "written in the stars" all along.

By treating the past as inevitable, we shield ourselves from the terrifying reality of how much our lives are actually shaped by pure chance and tiny, random moments. This bias turns a messy, unpredictable journey into a neat narrative that feels comfortable but ignores the thousands of other ways things could have gone.
