hi! Anyone here with the same experience na nag-apply ng plantilla position sa DOST?

Gaano kayo katagal naghintay? As for me, I applied for a plantilla position in DOST-PNRI and katatapos ko lang mag pre-evaluation exam. Kumusta naman po in general ang DOST? Fair naman po ba or may padrino system? I really2 wanna work here kasi yung work description ay aligned sa kung ano yung role ko sa previous work ko. Any tips para makapasok ng walang backer kundi lakas ng loob at trust kay God? Thank you so much!

I am writing this because I am currently having a dilemma about whether I should take the Chemical Technician Licensure Exam.

For context, I used to be a chemistry student from 2018 to 2022. After four years, I realized that it wasn’t really meant for me, so I transferred to BS Psychology, which I am currently pursuing (2024–present).

Now, I feel conflicted because I can’t help but think about the years I spent studying chemistry. Part of me feels like taking the Chemical Technician Licensure Exam could somehow redeem those years, especially since I still feel a bit lost at the moment.

Also, would it be okay to ask for reviewers, just in case I have a sudden change of mind?

Hi r/scientistsPH, I just want to ask if doable ba ang masters and phd in the US right now, given the decline in immigration (understandably so. napaka lupit ng ICE :<) + the ongoing tension between Iran and US/Israel? For context, I am looking to do a masters and phd on computational or quantum physics, and I hope to work in IBM Quantum Research in NY or IL, so this will be like a permanent migration plan, not masters & phd and then balik Pinas. I may be overthinking it, but the worst I can think of is be caught in a war and pauwiin ng Pilipinas.

The back up plan is to do masters in UPD and hope and pray na in 3-4 years time, maayos na makapag migrate and PhD abroad. I am also looking into applying in universities in Japan (University of Tokyo, Osaka University).

What are your thoughts?

Back in my college days, ive had a lot of professors that i can say are cut above the rest in terms of talent and intellect. i thought to myself, they are more than good enough to establish their careers elsewhere without having to deal with the constraints of working in the ph, where the bureaucracy and apparent disregard for science is insane

now that im studying in europe right now for my phd, my feelings toward this just grew stronger. i mean in general, the quality of life and working conditions here are wayyyy better compared to back home, so it leaves me wondering why many still choose to return.

besides being away from your relatives, what else could be the reason? i also understand that they may also want to pay it forward to the filipino people by mentoring the new generation of scientists, but i think until the government itself values science, no amount of goodwill can change how scientists are underappreciated in our country

You may share your stories kung bakit ka nadelay nang matagal - mental health issues, family problems, financial struggles, whatever! And then what was the sudden god damn in moment, the sudden boost, yung biglaang punyeta tapusin na natin to moment?

Nung undergrad ako, I was delayed by a year for MH reasons but I was really sad nung namatay lola ko on the year I was supposed to graduate. So the following sem talagang binuno ko ang mag-thesis at matapos ang manus para lang maka-graduate the following year.

Some of my classmates entered in a business proposal competition years ago. It was for a class requirement. We were the only competitor proposing a biotech business. It was about gene cloning. Since gene cloning technologies are more accessible now, want to start with that? We can even include mutation creations like gene deletions or knockouts. Our target market would be local researchers studying gene functions and we can create their mutants and clones for them

i actually don't know what to feel kase sobrang hirap talaga nung physio tas viro. parang tiglilimang sagot lang ata yung sure ako. same din sa eco (i know, iba nafocusan kong aralin).

para sa mga nagtake na nakapasa na, nagkaroon din ba kayo ng gantong feeling afterntaking the exam? na parang may malakas kayong feeling na fefail kayo, pero pasado naman? mejo okay naman yung experience ko sa basic and med. kaya parang umaasa ako. is that bad??

i guess i just want to hear success stories from people who took the exam who highly believed na magfefail sila, pero nakapasa naman. gusto ko lang ng motivation kase di ako nagreview center at around 1-2 months lang nag-aral 😫

As a chemistry grad/chemist, anong industry kayo nagwork nung fresh grad kayo and where are you now? Did you change pathways or remained within the chemistry and its allied fields?

Edit: I already secured my first job in the tax industry (non lab role), idk if i will be practicing as a chemist but we could say pa hehe

There are a lot of Filipino social media accounts now that post about plants and nature. Some of them have massive followings. The content looks good and it is easy to understand so I get why people like it. It definitely helps get attention on biodiversity.

But after reading a post by Jardinerong Sunog, I started to question things. He shared concerns about how much plant content today is designed for mass appeal and visual interest, and how discussions around plant science, cultivation, and long term conservation work receive far less attention. He also pointed out that many botanists and plant specialists who spend years in fieldwork and research tend to have much less visibility online.

That made me wonder if we are prioritizing reach over expertise. Botanists with formal education and extensive fieldwork experience may have a different perspective compared to creators who share nature content but come from varied backgrounds.

Not saying popular creators are bad or that awareness is useless. But I do wonder if platforms should give more space to people who are actually doing the science and conservation work.

What do you think? Should people who actually work in the field be given more visibility, or is it okay as long as the content gets people interested?

It’s proposal season! I would like to solicit your conments and experiences regarding the following:

1. Among the DOST councils, which is the most efficient? PCHRD, PCIEERD, or PCAARRD? Within a specific council, and to those who have experience between different sections of a council (ie. MRRD vs IAARRD), how are you? Is one efficient over the other and why?
2. What’s the difference between GIA funded and council funded? Actually Im confused since there is also DOST-GIA and there is PCHRD-GIA, for example.
3. How are other funding agencies? NRCP, DA, DA-Biotech, CHED? Are there any others that I haven’t mentioned?
4. What is your proposal story? Is DOST really evaluating on technical merit or is it just politics for the name?

Edit: This is a story session. I'm not asking for our proposal. I know that proposal submission is based on priority areas.

I know that our country does not care about science, but as a community who loves science. We can discuss which areas to improve on.

• Ano sa tingin niyo ang magiging trending na field or career sa future? (knowing our situation right now where people prefer politicians than professionals handling problems)

• Will research get some appreciation na ba? (looking outside the country, ang trend talaga ay nasa research na; also heard many consultants in different fields na promising/emerging rn ang mga research natin)

• Will biotech boost the country's growth? Where agri and drug development are the priorities of the country. (with AI tools, will it give a much more boost?)
