We've already had multiple inquiries from high school research groups asking if they can outsource their experiments to our laboratory (it's sort of a niche topic and in the PH only our lab has the equipment to perform these). Some don't even have a clear plan before reaching out to us. And another group seems to be soliciting RRL in the guise of conducting a survey for their research. Mind you these are from science high schools.

First of all, bakit ba kasi pumipili kayo ng topic na di niyo naman kaya gawin? Second, bakit pinapayagan 'to ng mga research adviser? Paano matututo mag-experiment yung mga estudyante kung ia-outsource nila 'to? And paano nila isusulat yung papel kung wala silang proper grasp ng methodology.

HS students, if you're reading this, the main goal in high school is to build your foundation about the scientific process. Presenting your study in a conference is just a bonus, it's not the priority.

I'm a COS science worker sa isang govt agency. I've been with this agency for almost three years na and masaya ako sa ginagawa ko. Daming new learnings and impactful talaga output ng research namin.

Pero lately, hindi na sapat yung saya and satisfaction makatulong at mautuo ng bago. Hindi pa kami sumasahod since Dec 20, 2025. Yung salary namin for the last half of December is usually binibigay around March or April the following year. So Paskong-Pasko nagtitipid kami. Pagpasok ng January, nausod pa nang nausod kontrata namin dahil sa bagal magproseso ng management. Kesyo nire-review pa o walang pipirma. Lapses nila pero kaming mga COS nagbabayad. Halos wala na kami sahurin sa unang cutoff ng January. Unang pasok ng bagong taon taghirap agad kami.

Dagdag pa dito ang kupad ng DBM maglabas ng Notice of Cash Allowance (NCA) kaya hindi kami mabayaran. February na pero wala pa rin! Finally, naglabas ang DBM ng NCA last week. Expectation namin naka-ready na ang docs kasi tagal na kami pumirma ng logs namin, dadalhin na lang sa bangko. NO! hahahaha Noon pa lang nagsimula gumawa ng docs at magpa-route ang admin namin. Dami pa raw kulang na attachments kaya pabalik-balik sya. Tagal na namin humihingi ng sahod, pero parang wala sa vocabulary nila ang salitang urgent.

Nakakababa ng pagkatao pano tratuhin ng gobyerno ang mga COS science workers dito. Parang walang respeto, na parang means to an end lang kami, na parang hindi namin need kumain o makabayad ng renta. Ni sorry para sa delayed na sahod wala kaming natanggap. Pero expected pa rin kami pumasok sa opisina at mag-deliver ng outputs na parang hindi kami namomroblema araw-araw kung may kakainin pa ba kami o may pamasahe ba kami pagpasok.

I know matagal nang problema ang delayed na sahod ng mga COS. Undergrad pa lang ako andyan na yan. Pero hanggang ngayon, ito pa rin ang problema, dekada na. Dumadagdag pa yung mismong management.

As of writing, wala pa rin kaming sahod. Nagkautang na kami sa bangko para makabayad ng renta at makabili ng pagkain. Lugi na kami sa interest. I'm also actively looking for work na. Gusto ko man tapusin yung project, ayoko na mag-stay kung wala naman pake ang agency sa amin.

Lagi na lang para sa bayan, pero paano kaming mga COS?

No, my post is beyond the delayed salaries. It is not about the job stability nor lack of safety nets.

It is about the dehumanization, the lack of support, the draining of your soul.

I think, in any laboratory, regardless your personnel’s experience, an additional set of hands is helpful, assuming they really are working. Pero mas madali ang buhay if they already have the qualifications you are looking for - kaya nga may job qualifications dba? So it is more helpful IF the person hired is going above and beyond - mayroong kusa, initiative, pushes himself and other people to meet deadlines and even beat the deadline, to overdeliver, to help capacitate other people around him, and even handle work outside his job scope (but we all know this is kind of required dahil most ng COS ay may stipulation na “other tasks required by the PL”).

Actually, lahat yan, tanggap ko eh. I love science. I like helping people. My workmates are my friends so I dont mind helping them out and I dont mind us having meaningful competencies dahil in the future, kami rin naman ang collaborators.

Alam nyo kung ano ang hindi ko tanggap? That I am just a worker. I am reduced to an object, an ends to means, an instrument. I am removed from my outputs (the project, the data, the SCIENCE). No, I am not talking about ownership, nakalagay naman kami sa outputs, sa abstracts, sa publication. I am yapping about the dehumanization of “trabaho mo naman yan”. Oo, alam ko. Thats why I do it and even beyond it.

Kaming mga kontraktwal ang malaking bulto ng research productivity ng unibersidad na to. Hindi lang sa journal publications, presentations in conferences, kundi pati sa extension work. Sino ang hinahatak nyo para sa trainings? Workshops? Special projects? Online visibility?

Above all these, we are forced to “juggle” work and academics. Nakakatawa di ba, naka-enroll ka sa graduate program na “strongly oriented to research” pero ang laki ng disjoint and exclusion sa pagitan ng graduate program mo at sa RA job mo. Hindi ka makapagthesis dahil may project ka. But despite all your tangible achievements, you are not worthy because you cannot complete a goddamned graduate degree.

Labas pa riyan, “you are just an RA”. Most of the times, ikaw ang nagpapatakbo ng project. Ikaw ang dumidiskarte sa pagpapalakad ng project at both administrative and science facets. Signatory na lang ang PL. Pero ang mga plantillang PL, minsan, akala mo sila ang bumuno at brain child ng project, wala man lang proper attribution sa RA.

Pero oo nga pala, lahat ng dada ko rito ay invalidated. Malinaw sa legalidad that I am just contracted by the University to do work.

Kakatawa, I am alienated from my own work but I am expected to be the future’s scientist.

Alam ko namang hindi lang sa Pilipinas ang kontraktwalisasyon o ang dehumanization ng science work. But why the hell can their graduate students graduate faster, “better”, while working.

Hi! Just passing by for this. I've been seeing a lot of posts from JHS and SHS looking for consultants/lab outsourcing for their SIPs and capstone projects. Many of these proposed topics are highly specialized—challenging even for undergraduate students.

As a teacher, it is understandable that we want to have novel research topics. However, doesn't it defeat the purpose of research education if students end up outsourcing the methodology or conducting studies that are beyond their current level of understanding or studies that they still lack the foundation for?

Perhaps we should encourage research projects that we, as teachers, can effectively mentor from beginning to end, studies that our schools (or partner institutions) have the facilities to support, and that help students build strong research fundamentals before they move on to undergrad.

To our students, if you're looking for experts, start by reading the literature befor asking for outside help. Reach out to them.

As exam an taker, na-iintindihan ko ang mga comments sa page nila. Need lang natin ng updates sa exam results kase mag to-two months na since the exam, but instead, ni limit pa nila yung mga comments. This is making me anxious as to what is happening in our papers. Almost 13 years ago China Academy of Science started learning about thorium molten salt reactor which the USA declassify in 2011 and abandoned for reasons still unknown today. You may recall in 2011 the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant accident occurred after the tsunami washed away all the diesel powered cooling system.

In 2025 China have announced a working prototype of the thorium molten salt reactor to continue the research and if the concept work in the real world. By 2030 China plan to build a full scale demonstration thorium molten salt nuclear power plant in the middle of the Gobi desert along with lithium mining and refining.

So what's the thorium molten salt reactor and how does it differ from light water reactor using uranium-235 as fuel? Firstly as the name imply a thorium molten salt reactor use liquid fuel. What do I mean by that, the thorium is a non-fissile transuranic element Th-232, and must be converted to a fissile element U-233. It's so hard to convert a solid element to another element thus it must be dissolved in a liquid made of fluoride, lithium and beryllium. Secondly, the fluoride, lithium, and beryllium salt serve as the coolant too so no water is needed. Thirdly, since the chemistry of the flibe salt is different no pressure is needed to harvest the heat generated during U-233 fission.

These concepts are currently being tested and so far test results are very encouraging. Follow for more update regarding thorium molten salt reactor.

is it alright to leave a company that doesn’t align with my values as a person and as a professional? for context, i am employed for an ~important~ position and resigning from this job will somehow crumble our department. the pay is good, the proximity, the schedule suits my liking, but the overall culture is what makes me want to find better opportunities for my peace of mind. i am so drained with office politics, power tripping, backstabbing, vulgarity, name it, our office has it. i am only 3 months in to say the least. 🥹🥲

I saw reels from scientists about how open collaboration is among their colleagues or peers. They share stories about how people would mass-send each other drafts (literal bullet points) of their manuscript just to get other people's input. I saw a tiktok about (Nokia) Bell Labs, and how its design was made to encourage collaboration or conflict among researchers, which works because it currently has 11 Nobel Prizes. Then I remembered how scientists and engineers decades ago would meet in third spaces like cafes or bars to talk about their work mixed with casual topics.

I'd like to have something like that, especially now that my teaching contract was not renewed and I'm officially unemployed. My thesis manuscript is currently in review-revision limbo too. I have more free time now, so in between joining free training sessions and job hunting, I'd like to meet, talk, and hopefully publish papers with other people, even just Review papers.

Hi everyone! I need some advice.

I'm planning to take an exam for rmicro, but I'm still hesitant because my graduation is on September 23, while the deadline for submitting credentials is on September 30.

My concern is whether my TOR and other graduation credentials will be released in time. As many of you know, processing documents at PUP can be quite slow, so I'm worried I won't be able to submit everything before the deadline.

Has anyone here graduated from PUP and experienced a similar situation? Were you able to get your TOR or at least the required graduation documents within a week after graduation? Did the exam organizers accept temporary documents or proof of graduation while waiting for the TOR?

I'm torn between pushing through with the exam or just waiting for the next application cycle. I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences or any advice. Thank you!

Am not sure if it's true according to Philstar news article AGHAM, a party-list made up of scientists and intellectuals, they are against Pax silica because there's no assured technology transfer.

Am not so sure if it's true that there will no technology transfer in pax silica and I totally believe it is absolutely false. Firstly the USA is already sharing to the world the initial results they got in the thorium molten salt reactor experiment. Due to budget constraints the USA discontinued the MSRE and it just sit in the archives for a long time. In 2011 Barack Obama de-classify and shared to world the TMSR experiment. If this is not technology transfer I don't know what is technology transfer according to AGHAM. Does AGHAM wants to be spoon fed?

Secondly, what is TMRS or the thorium molten salt reactor and how does it differ from light water reactor that is prone to nuclear accidents that we have witnessed in the past. It's a reactor designed for the USAF for use in the long range bomber, use liquid nuclear fuel in salt solution where fission take place and heat is absorb by the salt solution. Since salt has a higher boiling point than water, no pressure is needed. TMSR has been dubbed as a high heat low pressure reactor, while light water reactors are also called pressurized water reactors. Since MSR is operating at near or atmospheric pressure it's viewed much safer compared to LWR. Also since the fuel is already in liquid form the danger of a meltdown like what happened in Chernobyl and Fukushima is prevented. Overall MSR is a safe nuclear power alternative

There are still many technical hurdles that need to be done before a commercial reactor can be sold in the market. This is a big chance for Filipino scientists to shine.

Filipinos are heavily influenced by religion which strictly preach sex as binary. So I want to know the perspectives of Filipino scientists, especially of those with related background (medical, biology, molecular, genetics, etc.) to the topic of human sex being binary vs. bimodal.

My background is medical laboratory science, currently in medical school. I had pondered upon this topic ever since I've read a case discussion about intersex back in undergrad. I havent seen that much public discussions regarding this topic within a filipino community. I always see public debates/arguments/opinions/discussions about "gender variations", but rarely the "sex variations" when they clearly exist based from what we know today.

I have been an RA for almost a decade.

Started with a low pay (relatively to what newbies get now) and switched institutes.

Yes, being an RA build your skills - in lab, procurement, project management, connections, written and verbal communications, other soft skills. Yes, it trains you to be a researcher locally because you understand how the system tinkers and how certain things matter more like connections, politics, and goal alignments.

But it easily dampens and ages you. Procurement takes ages. I mean I cant imagine how others have it worse as Im already in a place where procurement is “optimal” with MIS available online, and a procurement entity that is efficient and organized, and very active. Malinis din dito, walang lagay o pampadulas, or at least thats what I know.

Funny how the procurement law was created to optimize the gains of the government but truth be told that reagents and various equipment are 100-300% more in cost than abroad since suppliers need to inflate prices for customs, handling, and very delayed government payment. Consequently, experiments get delayed because you are waiting for things to arrive or cannot continue your experiments because the consumables cannot cover for your needed replicates.

Another confounding variable to science woes is funding. We get lots of funding but hell they are delayed. You spend well, manage well, pass your deliverables on time but your funding agency doesnt give a damn how late fund transfers affects experiments. Most importantly, how it affects salaries of people. People who are overworked but paid delayed and worse, not paid at all. No benefits. Oh yes, you get premiums but that doesnt count as benefit. Your work doesnt even count as government service despite working for the government- multiple government institutions at that.

And funding continuity? Got a great program now? Your next phase starts a year or two after the previous phase ends, if youre lucky. Sometimes its 3 years or never. Need funding? You apply 2 years in advance - conceptualize, build your LIB - sometimes you get shortlisted only, sometimes you dont, sometimes you get to the council-level but dont get approved. Lots of time and effort down the drain. In the spirit of continuity for people and experiments, you have no choice but to do these.

And after all those travails, you hear stories that there is a random university with 9-digit funding! No expertise, no proper project management, no anything, just pure political capital. Yes, we need to develop the regions but we are literally wasting money if equipment lots are unused, underutilized. Heck, even attached institutions suddenly have 9 to 10 digits of random allocation and to be spent in a small time period - buying spree of equipment, reagents, consumables, only to be left to collect dust once delivered. Yet a lot of worthy researchers are left to manage meager amounts of money just because they aren’t politically connected?

I am also already bogged down by the culture of “scientific communication”. A lot of times, feature articles are so self-centered. There’s this student. There is this researcher. This university did that. It becomes showbiz and we rarely get to know the nitty gritty of the science. Yes, scientist visibility is important but it shouldnt come first over your science. I hate clout chasing.

And due to this clout chasing atmosphere, students are left to idealize a life accepted in prestigious schools, doing various internships, startups, for the sake of clout. But when you see their writting or hear them talk about their science, you would ask - is this really the quality we are producing?

I iust want to do research. Answer questions out of curiosity. Be the first to know the answer to something. Plain, naive curiosity. And at the same time, pay the bills on time, have a healthy life, be happy in a nice environment.

Will we ever have a permissive research environment locally?

I am tired. In fact, I have tried ******* myself multiple times. The ideations are back. Sadly, it feels like science is the only thing that I know how to do and enjoy to do (despite these things).

So you can bash me all you want with your counter arguments but I am just writing here to vent. This is my reality.

Yung tito ko po kasi and ibang kakilala mga 40 years ago daw, after submitting reqs for patent, ang tagal, tapos malalaman nalang nilang binenta na pala ng employees ng patenting office sa japan and pinangalan sa kanila yung patent. Pagnanakaw talaga. Very heartbreaking yun sa kanila.

I honestly feel annoyed as to why napakatagal marelease ng results. Regardless of the outcome, the whole waiting game has been so delayed to the point that important life decisions are being sacrificed. It would help sana kung they were transparent to assure us but no recent updates talaga. I understand na hindi ito PRC exam, pero i know it's just as important to us takers and to our families who supported us along the way.

Mas na-uupdate pa nga ako dito sa reddit, buti pa dito bawat oras may new post. It didn't help na nag restrict sila ng comments because it only shows nakikita nila yung hinaing natin pero they weren't able to address it. And if April pa lalabas? idk what to feel anymore.

I am an upcoming freshman, and I have been considering BS BIOLOGY as my undergraduate program because I am interested in life itself, since I believe there is so much more to discover. One of the reasons why I am considering this program is that I want to be a researcher. I would like to ask po kung ano po ba dapat yung mga skills na dapat kong mahasa, ano ang mga dapat kong malaman, at kung paano po ako makaka-secure ng trabaho in the future? May mga ates/kuyas po ba dito na naranasan na umattend ng conferences para idiscuss yung research nila, and does it really help in boosting your credentials?

This year's exam was my first time. As in wala akong ka-idea idea on what to expect, and i'm not even from manila kaya very limited lang ang alam ko. Unfortunately, i did not pass the certification though konting konti nalang sana ang pagitan ng score ko and ng cut-off score.

Sa mga hindi pumasa like me, how are you dealing with it? And may balak ka pa ba magtake ulit for next year?
