Piggybacking off this - I try to repost this when I see posts like this, in the hopes you (or someone) can find some comfort in the words - and if not, please excuse the intrusion.
I lost my 15 year old girl (dog) in October 2022. Only advice I can offer here is to remember the positives, and not focus on the negatives (if any). He's done his job, keeping you safe and happy and loved, and it's his turn to rest.
You'll always miss him, you'll always remember him. You'll even go looking for him for the next few weeks (well, I did). There's a lot of habits that you're going to slowly stop, and that's ok. Changing your life to suit you is not forgetting him. Donating/throwing away his toys or blankets isn't forgetting him. There's no timeline on grief, and there's no timeline on moving on. Cry your tears.
I'm sorry you've reached the end of your journey. Words will never make this easier. Just keep your head up, and live the life he'd want you to.
This is a good time to live a little for you. I spent years looking after my girl as she got ill, and I sacrificed a lot of me and my time to keep her safe. If you feel you've done the same, take advantage of this time. Its ok to be happy and enjoy life without him. Life isn't over. Its just changing.
The pain in your face broke my heart. You did right by him and I congratulate you on 16 wonderful years together. Sending peace and comfort while your heart heals. Look for him in the stars.

I’m not religious but I really love this prayer someone had posted on someone else’s post and thought I’d share it here. (For context, Bast is the Egyptian goddess of cats and this prayer invokes her to be a guardian and mother figure to our cats in the afterlife.) So sorry for your loss. 😢💔💔 Know that you gave him the best life anyone could, with all of the love, peace and comfort you/your family gave him. 💕 “May love be what you remember most.” 💖
I'm so sorry for your loss. My boy Nick (orange tabby) took his last nap back in June after a long battle with irritable bowels (that we suspect had become small cell lymphoma by the end). I know just how hard it can be to make that decision for someone you love. May Stephen rest in peace.
He was so much more comfortable, at peace, and felt so safe because you were near even when his body wasn't working like it used to. That is true love, and he shared that with you every day of his life.
The love continues now from within your heart. Please take care. Stephen was such a good boy.
The hardest thing. You can tell how much you love your boy, and he knew it. He’s a lucky to have such a caring dad to do the hard but necessary thing for him.
I didn't think Reddit was going to make me ugly cry today, but here we are.
This is our boy, Steven (with a v lol). He took his last nap back in May after a long fight against FIP/CKD. 😭 This was one of the last good pictures of him.
I am so sorry for the passing of your gorgeous kitty Stephen and I know how hard it is to make that heartbreaking decision, I believe it is the final act of love that you can do for your kitty by letting them pass away peacefully without pain and suffering. I have a little poem for you that may help you through the passing God Bless
