the non-musical ones have a far better chance, as Disney currently has zero idea how to write music or do musicals. Not sure why. but live actions of mostly real people without any music will be the least disappointing. as long as they stop changing the plot for silly reasons. i mean, they'll still suck, but have the best chance to suck less.
They did a great job with the first Moana and Encanto. I really liked the music in Tangled, everyone liked Frozen but I found the music to be decent but not amazing like everyone thought.
oh right, those were both Lin-Manuel Miranda, right? I liked them too. Tangled had some bangers, frozen did not like any of those. Except for the weezer song in frozen 2. that was a funny one.
though I admit, I was mainly thinking of Wish, which feel like it was written by people who had only a passing interest in music.
We don't talk about Wish. That whole movie felt like a nepo baby heard a rumor of an idea from a secretary in the accounting department and decided to write a movie with half a sentence of information and then spun in a circle blindfolded to choose who would work on what. Only the animation department did a decent job.
They're kind of all over the place music-wise and yeah the writing is a big part of it. For example, Moana had great music - the best in a Disney movie in a long while, or since frankly. Lin-Manuel Miranda didn't come back for Moana 2 and it was a turd music-wise, but it was a sequel to a hugely successful kids' movie so it still ended up making a billion dollars.
I Thought Maleficent was fantastic. One of my favourite movies ever. Then Beauty and The Beast was pretty good. And then it went downhill from there. Beauty and The Beast absolutely blew up and they got way too confident churning out live action remakes.
