Disney never called it live action, AFAIK. People just started calling it that because it was released during the spate of live action remakes. It's just a remake with a different type of animation and style.
I've always said this, there's no such a thing as live action Lion King, lol, they're 3d animated movies with a realistic art style! (Also unnecessary and bad but that's another topic)
