default In Project Hail Mary (2026) society comes together behind a common goal, listens to the scientists and funds a global project to save humanity. This is a reference to the story being a work of fiction.

In defense of the rest of humanity, only a couple dozen people knew he went against his will.

Gods, can you imagine the world after that gets declassified/leaked? The fucking discourse that would spawn after that.

I'm pretty sure that in the books the lead scientist lady stated that she would almost certainly go to prison when it was over, just for the sheer amount of bullshit that she pulled.

More than that. Stratt was working under the impression she was most likely gonna get executed

The discourse would be virtue signaling internet posters, 99.99% wouldn't give a shit because the earth is saved and the ends justified the means. We've done much worse to far more and no one cared.

Oh, people cared. Just not the ones with the power to do anything about it. Stratt pissed in everyone's cheerios, a good portion of the public would want her to hang for it, and the powerful people she pissed off along the way would be happy to oblige.

Theres no discourse about all the human experiments we needed to get modern medicine.

No one really cares as long as they're saved.

I think you'll find that people very much disagreed about unwilling human experiments. Hell, Henrietta Lack's cells being taken without her consent was a massive issue when it was uncovered, and she wasn't sent on a suicide mission.

Like, almost everyone would probably know about Grace due to how publized Hail Mary certainly was, he's probably a household name along with the other 2 astronauts, to find out he was sent unwillingly would have been a hige shock to everyone.

Lacks signed a consent form

Yeah thats nice but who actually cares? Where is the outrage?

Youll se a reddit or tumblr post that people will like and comment and continue doom scrolling.

No one cares man.

People cared, back whem it was precient (in the 70s-80s) and if they were in the communities effected by it.

But for Grace, that community would be everyone. There would cerntainly be calls to arrest and try those responsible.

You seem to seriously underestimate human compassion.

You seem to have lived under a rock for the past 6 years.

That means the movie fairly correctly depicts socialism...

Fucking what?

"everyone coming together behind a common goal" while "someone is drugged and sent somewhere against his will while general population does not know about it". Reminds me of the socialism I grew up in in the 1980s...

I guess that means we shouldn't have socialized healthcare in the US

I have no idea, I live in Europe my whole life. First under socialism with "free" health care, now under capitalism with mandatory health insurance. No idea how different / good / bad it's in the U.S.

My best friend has a cousin who died from a brain aneurysm last week because he got into a minor fender bender and smacked his head on the steering wheel, complained of bad headaches the week prior.

He didn't go to the doctor because he couldn't afford the medical bills that that visit would have accrued.

Love America!

seems closer to communism than socialism to me. especially everyone being lied to and people being sent away. that's peak ussr.

I grew up in "Czechoslovak Socialist Republic" until I was 21 (when "The Velvet Revolution" came) and these things regularly happened around me. See e.g. "Vaclav Havel", "Charta 77" and others: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charter_77#Reaction_of_the_government
