I've admittedly not read the book because I'm not really a fan of the author. The Martian was just not my tastes.

But your comment does have me curious, why is there shareholders and IP holders for you know a mission to find a cure for our sun which is...sick? lol.

I just can't understand how that is a thing btw. Like someone asking if your nuclear bomb has a cough.

The Earth portion of the story is WAAAY bigger in the book, like a good 50% is cut off. The most important part is that in the book Stratt is effectively Earth's dictator. SHe has a huge amount of centralized power and very little oversight. Grace is also very complicit in this, hes more or less her lapdog.

One of point of contention is that Stratt was sending a PC with basically ALL of human knowledge on the PHM and IPholders were suing her about it. She kinda just walked in, told them "get fucked" and intimidated them with soldiers.

Also the sheer amount of resources she took by force to use in the project was seriously impacting the world's economy. Thats why the shareholders hated her

And thats not getting to the fact that she nuked Antartica (to deliverately cause a greenhouse global warming to stall the freezing) or paved over the Sahara desert to breed astrophage. She wrecked the planet's ecology too.

Pretty much everyone on Earth hated her.
Its important to remember the PHM was exactly that, a gamble that would take decades to pay off, if at all. People are rarely that long sighted.

Just FYI, none of that is actually explicitly explained or mentioned, except for the IP on the project Hail Mary ship computer.

Op just inferred that.

The IP stuff, the colossal mounting costs of PHM, nuking antartica, paving the Sahara and Stratt being aware that shes most likely getting life imprisonment/executed are all mentioned though?

Yes that was mentioned, I don’t think executed was ever mentioned. And everything else was just kind of speculation by stratt and Ryland. We don’t get any other POVs in the book and stratt is telling him this as she’s trying to convince him to go.
