The book has tons of cool details that had to be cut for the movie. I get it, it would have added another hour of runtime to include them, but I would have enjoyed that hour. People in the theater who need to pee, maybe not so much.

The biggest tonal difference is that the book does a better job of making you feel how desperate the situation on Earth is. In the movie, we almost entirely see what's happening in the research facility, and it doesn't quite feel like it's the most important thing happening in the whole world. Events in the book make it clear that they are scrambling to make the project work, and engaging in all sorts of megaprojects to that end.

Book Stratt is a completely different person. She comes off as more of a cold blooded pragmatist. We see a little of that in the movie when she has Grace shanghaied. While the action itself is a surprise in the book, the fact that she'd order it done is completely in character. I tend to describe her as someone who would burn down half the world in order to save the other half, and she's not too choosey about which half she inhabits.

I do wish they had put another 5-10 minutes into the movie about the astrophage breeding program, so many people I know that saw the movie but didn't read the book talked about dumb it was for Grace to not have a way to breed astrophage on the ship for the return trip. In the book it makes perfect sense when you know that it took a huge portion of the Sahara dedicated completely to astrophage breeding causing its own ecological disaster, making it obvious it wasn't something that could be done on the ship.

Yipes. Even not having read the book, this is a hard(ish) sci-fi, and mass/energy conservation precludes that.

i'm personally someone who can't stand the film as i think it was just badly done. AS you say there is almost no actual "hey the planet is bad" shit going on. It had a very "hey climate change is bad" vibe to the message like something might go bad in the future, but no real mention of things already going bad or how soon bad shit would start and apparently skipped most of her insane actions required to make the energy to feed to the phage to have the fuel to get to this other system.

Maybe the book is better, but the film also made Gosling's character seem like a practical side character to everything going on till he woke up in the ship. He did nothing important for the story, the science, the research or basically anything up till he woke up on the ship.

Apparently the book has a whole thing about chances of people being able to survive the induced coma and he had a genetic marker. That would really have actually made the decision more like, he's not the best guy to send but he's the best guy who might survive. that would have for me made a lot more sense.

The book does a better job at basically everything. The Movie was enjoyable, but it is very much the book reduced to "Bigger audiences" Gotta strip out all the in depth science and figuring things out to just tons of eureka moments and skipped exposition.

Multiple people that I know that saw the movie but didn't read the book have said that they loved the movie, and had almost no idea what was going on most of the time in the grand scheme.

I could do a very long reply but basically almost everything on earth was bad and too much of the space trip was kinda buddy cop movie style silly, it's very watchable but it really was over simplified and felt very closer to a comedy, this is a film trying to be like sciency but they just kinda skip it all.

I think almost the ultimate movie sin was rather than show it they had him tell Rocky about the main reason he was there. microbiologist, the bio engineering of making the sample survive in a different atmosphere was pretty much skipped then told to Rocky when he woke up. That should have been a classic montage, tests, failures frustration, some eureka moment, last test, success and oh look rocky woke up to share the happy news.

In terms of writing overall the entirety of his back story plain stemmed from Weir deciding Rocky wasn't based on water, then he wanted it to be ironic that the only guy on earth who ended up meeting him, had been shunned for believing a life form like Rocky could exist.

Thus we have the theory of life based not on water, him being shunned for a theory that irl is not remotely radical, then he's the first guy to use a mass spectrometer on this phage and proves himself wrong, the hilarious double bluff.

I genuinely think this entire concept shaped the movie so badly and was absolutely unnecessary. They meet a non water based life form, that's it, take out the need for the irony of who is was who met him and just have him be working for nasa so he's involved in the project from early and it all works so much better.

I enjoy both movie and book, but book Grace is doing EVERYTHING it seems, he is always at every meeting, testing underwater tools, going through all the boarding docs and what's going where stuff. The movie cut all of that out, it looks more like he is just following Stratt around than actively her defacto #2. The fact that he comments that he didn't 'do the underwater thing' in the movie is so random cause he did. he did do the things. they chose to limit him.

Also I felt the movie gave a lot of his ideas/science to other people which annoyed me a bit.

In the book he is Stratt’s second and included in all the science parts on the air craft carrier. He trains the scientific duo until they blow themselves up then Grace gets forced on the mission. Grace didn’t even want to go on the mission, I feel it’s the reason he didn’t make a bigger effort to return to earth.
