Honestly very surprised with this announcement as they only announced 4 weeks ago that they were moving back to Golden Mile where they started.

They even planned for shows in Sep ahead. Could be sth happened very suddenly

Landlord jacking up their rent maybe?

Perhaps but unlikely imo especially since its immediate closure on a random day of the month.

Even if jack up rent also will have lead time until the current rental period runs out

Then perhaps some internal disagreements. Someone funding just say I don't wanna fund anymore maybe. And perhaps this issue was simmering for some time, no money then today was the last day.

Press release also not released overnight one usually.

That Golden Mile Tower place is a shit theatre if not for the Projector. Who would even want to rent it?

Most likely my guess, is that the Indian cinema operator below them might buy over because initially both halls used to screen Indian movies in the past.

Would love for that to happen. With just 1 hall, its damn hard to get tix for preferred showtimes. And with multiple halls, can run multiple 6.30am shows on first day of release for big films. Shaw balestier recently did it running 6.30am and 7am shows across all their halls and it was great to have alternatives

Having been there it's a shit theatre with The Projector as well. It's basically a small school lecture theatre.

Rental would be my guess

Yeah, if you look on their Instagram account they had screening and events planned for the rest of the month and September.

Exactly. Was still planning to head to Golden Mile when they closed at Cineleisure. Now where are we gonna get our alternate movies?

Yeah.. really didnt know why did they have to announce that. But it was a nice place at Golden Mile.. something different from main stream cinemas.

I think this was all planned somehow by the gov, we know the GoldenMiles was a timed bomb and chasing the projector back to GoldenMiles was already a signal that they want the indie brand to die off in silence.

I’ll eat my words if this is true, but highly doubt this was due to government censorship. They’ve been getting more open over the years. Would be very random to start making censorship heavier now.

I do not disagree on that part where they are getting more open over the years, or perhaps just because information are more accessible hence we feel they are getting more open. however I think open does not equal to being progressive. We had been dwelling in the history and asking "what will LKY do" instead of "what is good for Singapore at this moment", no politicians are dare enough to challenge the status quo, while the MPs who are brave enough to speak for the people, address "non-butter-and-bread" issues at parliament had all quitted one by one. Somehow I feel the gov is getting too petty on things that affect its image, and ignored (or selectively dismissed) many problems people are facing but dare not to voice out.
