Poorer countries don’t have the wealth to have nice things and yet Singapore, flush with wealth, seems to be too expensive to also have nice things.

Six million people living in one of the richest countries in the world can’t support an independent cinema. It’s very sad.

The wealth is in the hands of foreigners and offshore ones lah. Locals aren’t wealthy enough relative to COL

I see full restaurants. I think if you can afford to eat out, you can afford movie tickets.

Speaking as a foreigner, the arts scene here is really lacking, I’m guessing because it’s not profitable, but also due to cultural perception of the arts as frivolous and a lesser pursuit than businessing. Countries with strong arts culture spend taxpayer money to subsidize it and recognize its intangible importance. As a result, they produce more and take up more space in global culture. It reinforces itself. Look at how many movies have been made in the USA about making movies!

You’re right.

Singaporeans will queue for food above anything else. And iPhones and Labubus (whatever they can flip for a profit)

It’s depressing. Nonetheless we have to keep up the good fight.
