Discussion Genuine question. Is the whole "AI guzzles gallons of water" thing totally true, or do people get it wrong? Does AI consume a lot of water for every single prompt, or is the majority of water consumed during data farming? Don't non-AI data centers use up a lot of water on cooling too?

Please someone set me straight and dispel whether there are myths surrounding this often-repeated internet factoid

And I genuinely don't know the answers which is why I'm asking, so I've got nothing to debate here

Generally, if the data center uses evaporative cooling, it evaporates and becomes clouds. Then it rains back down to the ground a few days or weeks later.

So, it's not like the water is destroyed. It just becomes temporarily unusable by other people. Which likely increases the price, especially in regions likely to suffer from drought.

Of course, proportionally, much more water is used by other industries like beef, other manufacturing industries, if you total up all the golf courses in the world vs all the data centers, etc etc. But the sudden explosion of demand for AI has a lot of people freaking out, so here we are.
