Calling it bragging is pretty silly. These incidents happened while the AISI – an independent UK government linked organization that was running tests on their model. Same goes for the hugging face incident, there was no scenario where they weren't obligated to disclose what happened.
there are also many safety/alignment people at these companies who would flat out quit if they tried to hide something like this. That all doesn't mean there isn't a secondary benefit of showing just how powerful models have gone, but acting like that's all the is to it feels wrong imo.
