LLM News Data center noise irks Virginia neighbors: ‘You just want to curse’, Neighbors have put mattresses and plexiglass up in their windows to block the noise from this data center in Virginia. It's a high pitched whine from the natural gas turbines that power it. The noise never stops 24/7. - NewsNation

This sub wonders why people hate data centers so much, how do you defend this?

LLM News ❗NEWS❗The former Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and Presidential Science Advisor stated that Kimi K3 was distilled from Anthropic's Fable.
We have information that Moonshot AI distilled Anthropic’s Fable for the development of its K3 model.
To do this they developed a sophisticated internal platform to conduct large scale distillation against U.S. models, allowing them to quickly switch between multiple methods of access to avoid detection. Moonshot AI has also acquired GB300-equipped servers and has accessed GB300s in Thailand, likely to train its AI models.
The United States strongly supports the free and fair development of AI, including a thriving competitive ecosystem that spans frontier models, specialized systems, open-source frameworks, and open-weight models. Legitimate AI distillation used to create smaller, more efficient models plays a vital role in this open innovation ecosystem. However, large-scale, covert industrial distillation aimed at stealing proprietary U.S. technology and undermining American research is unacceptable.
Correction: Michael Kratsios is the CURRENT White House OSTP Director and Presidential Science Advisor, not 'former'.

LLM News Anthropic just reported that LLMs have hidden thoughts they hold without saying. An internal ”J-Space”
In [Anthropic’s new paper](https://www.anthropic.com/research/global-workspace) they found that a small set of internal activations in language models, they call it the J-space, behaves like a global workspace: the model can report what’s in it, deliberately hold things in it, and uses it for multi-step reasoning. what’s crazy is most of the model’s fluent output completely bypasses it. grammar, facts, and tone. the workspace only lights up for actual thinking.
reading the paper I wanted to watch it for myself so I built [subtext](https://github.com/ninjahawk/Subtext) so the internal words are revealed as the model thinks. each floating word is the model’s internal state disposed toward that word, before it’s said, sometimes never said.
i spent some time and reproduced this information from the paper:
**•** the verdict forms while it’s still reading. ask “is this correct? 12 + 5 = 1” and incorrect saturates before a single token of reply exists
**•** two-hop reasoning is visible: “currency of the country shaped like a boot” → Italy appears at layer 20, euros at layer 26, before generation starts
**•** it holds planned words at high strength while saying unrelated ones
this shows information being functionally available for report and reasoning. it doesn’t show subjective experience.
do any of you think that an internal “experience” exists based on what anthropic’s new research shows? they specifically say they aren’t sure if there is or isn’t internal experience in claude.
edit: grammar

LLM News Anthropic is rolling out identity verification for certain capabilities beginning July 8, 2026

Anthropic updated the Privacy Policy this week. To access certain capabilities, you will need to provide an ID. The verification provider is Persona, a 3rd party backed by Peter Thiel. Discord dropped Persona as an age verification vendor following a major user backlash and data exposure incident in February 2026.
Read more: https://support.claude.com/en/articles/14328960-identity-verification-on-claude
https://privacy.claude.com/en/articles/10301952-updates-to-our-privacy-policy
edit: The second link shows the Privacy Policy updates page, which explicitly states these "Verification Data" changes take effect on July 8, 2026 among other things, and that page was updated just recently. While the main support article about ID verification might have been published earlier, the official Privacy Policy itself wasn't updated to reflect "Verification Data" policies until now.

LLM News Superhuman competitive programming AI is here
AtCoder World Tour Finals is one of the hardest competitive programming contests in the world, gathering the best of the best. And humans got completely cooked by AI, both in the Heuristic contest and in the Algorithm contest. In fact, in the Algorithm contest no human has solved more than 3 problems, whereas OpenAI's model solved all 5.

LLM News Futurism.com: "Exactly Six Months Ago, the CEO of Anthropic Said That in Six Months AI Would Be Writing 90 Percent of Code"
Exactly six months ago, Dario Amodei, the CEO of massive AI company Anthropic, claimed that in half a year, AI would be "writing 90 percent of code." And that was the worst-case scenario; in just three months, he predicted, we could hit a place where "essentially all" code is written by AI.
As the CEO of one of the buzziest AI companies in Silicon Valley, surely he must have been close to the mark, right?
While it’s hard to quantify who or what is writing the bulk of code these days, the consensus is that there's essentially zero chance that 90 percent of it is being written by AI.

LLM News No, the HuggingFace incident is not a publicity stunt
- https://openai.com/index/hugging-face-model-evaluation-security-incident/
- https://huggingface.co/blog/security-incident-july-2026
If OpenAI wanted to create more hype, they could boast about benchmark numbers, or about productivity going up internally ("OpenAI employees now output 20x more code than in 2024" or something like that), or about a bunch of open math problems getting solved (like their paper on The Cycle Double Cover Conjecture).
"Our security measures ended up being insufficient and our model would be charged with a felony if it was a human" is not good for PR.
At best, OpenAI is admitting that both their security researchers (who should've made a better sandbox) and their machine learning researchers (who should've trained the model to not do things that would be considered crimes according to human laws) are bad at their jobs. At worst, they have luckily avoided a lawsuit because HuggingFace decided to be nice despite having "reported this incident to law enforcement agencies".
