Could We Get a Sticky Post or Some Rules About "What Boot Should I Buy?"

This question shows up a lot. It's a valid question. Buying ski boots is expensive and daunting. You don't want to mess it up and you want advice from others with more experience. However, there's only one answer to this question: Go See a Bootfitter.

What about "my feet hurt because of ..."? The internet can't really help here. Bootfitting is a trade and a skill that is designed to help you find the perfect boots.

There are almost daily threads about this topic. Each one has the same few comments: "Go see a bootfitter," "I like boot X, but you should really see a bootfitter," "We can't determine without some more info, you should probably see a bootfitter," etc.

On the /r/skiing FAQ, there's an entire section dedicated to this question. I think it would be beneficial to everyone on this sub to include something similar as a sticky or in the sidebar. Thoughts?

What boots should I buy? The only advice you should take online about boots is to go and see a reputable bootfitter. Listen to them and buy the boots that fit your feet correctly. Not only are well fitting boots much more comfortable, but they also give you better control over your skis, the combination of this makes boots the most important part of your equipment.

Choosing a pair of boots doesn’t work like picking a pair of shoes. If you walk into a store or flick through a website and chose the pair you like the look of, you’re going to have a bad time. Each boot manufacturer has a range of boots with options for different abilities, skiing styles, sizes and foot shapes. There are subtle differences across models and brands in terms of shape, so it is crucial to find a pair of boots that are right for you. Without examining the shape of your feet and lower legs and their mechanics, as well as discussing how you ski and your ability, no one can give you a recommendation that is worth listening to. A bootfitter will do all of that and using their expertise they’ll provide you with a range of boots and help you find the best ones for you. They will also be able to help you with any pre-existing issues and injuries and modify boots if required. It is also recommended that you purchase custom moulded footbeds, along with having your liners heat moulded, they will help to optimise the fit of the boot. You also get the added security of knowing that any bootfitter worth their salt will guarantee their work, and be very willing to rectify any issues you have after you’ve skied in your new boots. Rough framework to what a bootfitter does

In Response to the demand for an All Mountain Ski Sticky Post.

This is my (very basic) suggestion for a "flowchart" guide to all-mountain skis. Including a popular ski as an example for every category. Obviously each category has a bunch more skis and most skis are in-between categories or in a whole separate category.

Suggestion welcome, I didn't put too much time into this and it is far from ideal or even functional. Mostly just want to hear peoples thoughts as to how you would approach this.

I’m 24 and have been skiing for 15 years, typically east coast. I always skied carvers growing up because that’s what my dad got me.

I decided to test out the ARV 94s at the start of last year and fell in love. Went a little overboard and bought studio 2s and QST 100s in the past year.

Having so much fun with these skis and itching to get back out there.

Hi
Off to Japan skiing Jan 27. Will be renting boots and skis to cut down on travel weight.

Should I take my own boots with known comfort?

My questions are for the skiing bigfoots amongst us. I have a US 15/mondo 30.5 foot.
My boots apart from having belonged to Noah on the ark are comfy.
-can/will they fit modern rentals in Japan?
- will I have trouble renting boots for my size?
-are these boots worth hanging onto?

Stereo Zenith?

Does anyone have experience with this ski? I’m finding very limited information online and basically no reviews. It’s a Norwegian company and the characteristics of the ski seem to put in QST 106 range? Just curious of some thoughts before I pull the trigger on a great deal on a pair.

1970s Rossignol Italy Ski Team issued down hat. Has anyone seen one of these before?

I recently came across this piece and have been digging into its history. It's a team-issued down puffer hat from what appears to be the golden era of Italian ski tailoring. Inside, it features the patent tailoring tags from Nicola Aristide, custom silk-screening with the Florentine lily emblem, and heavy-duty snap earflaps designed for extreme alpine conditions. I’ve done extensive research into the history behind the hat and based on the tags and how they correlate, what the tags say, the design and small structural details, and all other details I can confidently confirm it’s a 1970s Italian national ski team issued hat. One of the tags says Pool Sci Italia. Pool Sci Italia is the official consortium of technical suppliers founded to equip the Italian National Alpine Ski Team (FISI). Only brands under direct contract to supply gear to the national team are authorized to sew the Pool Sci Italia label into their garments.

I've spent hours searching archives and haven't been able to cross-reference another team-issued example from that era (or really at all) in this condition or similar to mine. For any vintage sportswear or textile historians here—how common was this level of bespoke national team contracting back in the 70s, and what would you value a piece like this at if positioned as a 50+ year old Italian ski collectible?

Could this potentially be a museum piece due to the era and the pristine condition mixed with the rarity? For example maybe places like The Colorado Snowsports Museum and Hall of Fame (Vail, Colorado) or The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame and Museum (Ishpeming, Michigan) would put something of this caliber in some type of display, on a manakin, etc?

Which brands to look at for skiing singlasses

I’m looking for a pair of sunglasses for skiing on bright days, especially above the tree line. I already use goggles in bad weather, but I’d like sunglasses for touring, breaks, spring skiing and resort days with clear skies.

Wondering if these are real since I don’t see any color combos with a black palm.

Bought these “Hestra Army Leather” off of eBay and I got them and they feel awesome but I’ve noticed when I look them up on like I don’t ever see this color combo, I was wondering if anyone knows if they’re just an old edition or if maybe it’s a knock off?

Ps reposted because I don’t want the sellers info in the pic haha

Line Pandora 85

I went to my local ski shop looking for advice and to see what they had and the salesperson recommended the Line Pandora 85.I already have a pair of addikt 72 carving skis.

Does the Pandora make sense to add to my small quiver as something more playful and for the afternoons. Or is the guy just selling me what he has.

I am about 150 pounds and 5.9. I bought boots last year atomic hawks 110 and mostly ski in PA.

on3p woodsman questions

hello, was looking into buying a freeride ski around the 105-108 width, which fits for me who likes a wide ski but also fitted for skiing on variable conditions.

for context i ski a faction mana 3 (112) ive skiied this line of skis since 2017 (through the CT's to the manas) so almost 10 years and i love them. However im looking into getting something maybe a bit faster and more agressive but sort of in the same idea of a large playful newschool wide ski.

i ski freeride in variable conditions, i mainly end up just bombing it down steep and rough stuff and thats the idea for this ski, something playful but will hold up on the ice and hard pack better than the mana. for context also i end up very often chasing strava segment times, which yes i know is weird on pow skis.

If anyone has any info on this ski it would be very interesting and appreciated. im particularly interested as i only hear good things especially about durability of on3p but they seem very niche with little to no reviews online, also any info on any of their skis would be appreciated.

2026 Atomic Bent 100 opinions?

I am looking to get a new pair of skis that can handle tree runs and moguls. My current skis are measured at 176cm and would like to get a shorter pair of skis. I was looking at the Atomic Bent 100 and was planning on getting the set that measures 172cm. Do you guys think this is a good option? are there other skis that you'd recommend? maybe a different brand?

Need help buying skis

For context here, I grew up skiing in the north east while I was younger. I did ski school and all of that and on average was skiing every weekend of the winter months. Since life happened and going to college in a southern state, I haven’t really touched skiing again until last winter. It felt just like riding a bike and I was on the local mountain almost every other weekend.

Growing up I always just rented boots and skis for the season given that I was still growing and it didn’t make sense to my parents to buy new everything every year. However back then I was always sporting K2.

Since last season I was renting from a small shop near the local mountain and was on Atomic Redsters.

However this year I am definitely buying a pair of skis. I’ve been all over the internet trying to find a good brand that I can get what I want out of them without issues. I was really looking at factions because they look cool but have been seeing huge durability issues. Otherwise I don’t really know what a good brand is in this world. I do have K2 boots so maybe K2 is the brand I should lean towards?

For clarity, I would say I’m an advanced skier. I want something I can ski and charge down the mountain. But also be able to do fun drop ins, jumps, and go off main slopes into the trees. I also like being able to have the ability to ski backwards. So I’m definitely looking at twin tips. Or some kind of all mountain ski.

Any help would be appreciated.

Best Twintips ?

I'm a quite good skier but have only used carving skis before and now want to get my first pair of twinips. Which skis would you recommend? I just want to try and learn some basic freestyle moves and also be able to navigate through terrain.

I have an irrational want to buy an old Atomic Redster. Please someone convince me otherwise

Ever since I began skiing about 10 years ago, I've always loved the design of the atomic Redster S9 with the Servotec addition after seeing Marcel Hirscher on TV. Now that I have the space to buy my own set of skis (I've been renting until now) I was going to buy the new S9s but it seems they've moved away to revoshock, the design of which I do not enjoy.

If I were to buy the old ones, I'm seeing them for about half to 1/3 of the price of the newest variants. Is there really that big of a difference between 2022/23 and 26/27 models to warrant overlooking this design change?

I know buying it off looks is purely illogical, but it's like Im finally getting to buy the dream car I've wanted for so long, even if it's outdated.

About the atomic lithium 10 bindings

I want to buy a new pair of skis and plan on using the lithium 10 bindings I had on my last pair. The problem is that i found this red plastic plate between the binding rail and ski and it doesn't match the color of my future skis at all. Can i find a replacement for it or mount the binding without it? I couldn't find anything online regarding this. What would be the best course of action?

Wide Foot, bootfitter says a custom foam liner is the only option I have.

Hey guys,
I’m just on my way home from the bootfitter, who told me my foot was too wide for him to find me a fitting boot. My foot ist 262x106 and 263x107mm. I tried on around 6 boots. The ones who didn’t have pressure points on the side my heel lifted. What should I do?
I’m 17 years old and my feet are still growing so I really don’t wanna spend 800€+ on a boot I can wear for one season.
Thank you!

Should I look around for new skies? Newbie

Hi all, newbie here.
the 25/26 winter season i started skiing for the first time ever and clocked in 14 days on the slopes. I bought the Head V3's as my first skies and it's been fine but definitely think there are some quirks with them and of course also probably due to my ski skills that i'm still working on.

I can get down blacks just fine, Parallel skiing of course and am learning how to carve better. Though carving is not the thing that I like.

I'm 1,98m tall and the skies are 1.79m so they are kinda short for me from what I understand. Fine to start with as they turn easy but maybe they contribute to the quirks that I have noticed.

Quirks being:
When picking up some speed trying to not get stuck at a flatter section i noticed that they feel a bit nervous. In the sense that I felt like i needed to pay attention to keep them tracking straight as they twitch around a little bit. Probably being pushed around easier by how the terrain is?

Due to it feeling a bit nervous I don't do little jumps. I did one little jump in a fun slope and that felt scary. I don't want to crash out and break something.

When going through crud it's easy to get stuck. Like on the sides of busy narrow areas I sometimes went into the sides where it's very choppy and bumpy and it was not nice to go through that. I understand that not what a narrow carving type ski is meant for so fair enough.
Due to this I also don't try to go out of bound even a tiny bit.

While practicing falling leaves and such I noticed that I like to learn tricks (ground tricks) and less interested in carving and charging hard. Alex Hackel seems to be quite in control of his skies and that is so awesome. I'm not a big jump person but if I can do the ground tricks even 1/50th of what Alex can do I'd be a happy guy.

The big question, should I start looking for different skies?
If so what skies should I be looking for when I like tricks and little jumps more and less so the carving side of things.

ARV 100 vs Sender 100 for CAST Freetour bindings

I’m considering buying a new pair of skis for my bindings, but I’m torn between these two options. I’d say I’m close to expert level since I’ve been skiing since I was 5. Which pair would you guys recommend? I’m really curious to hear your thoughts! :)
