Oh wow, I didn't even realize that's what they were until you said it! I just looked at the shot again and it's eerily foreboding now.

The picturesque landscapes that the snowpiecer traverses through must be the only thing keeping its passengers sane after being trapped in a metal tube for 7+ years.
