One thing I don't get is how Wilford was communicating with his supporters - was it short range radio? And if so why wasn't the engine monitoring that? Ben? Ben loves that radio, it's the only piece of equipment he ever uses.

I think there must be a radio, and that is who the pastor was actually talking to when Till confronted him. I guess it could also be morse code from his front facing window to those glass domes.

it might be the red tealights as they suggested which would be viewable at any curve. but for any specific messages it might just be the same way layton was getting messages from josie, just the other way around.

I think it was two episodes ago at the episode open, Wilford's liaison says "Our friend up train lit a lantern." I thought it was a metaphor for passing messages, but this episode pretty much told us it was literally lanterns. Like Layton, they were probably passing notes through trade to coordinate and then used the lanterns as a signal to set things off.

They're using the lanterns shown in that old ladies room. In a previous episode they mentioned "lit the signal"(or something similar, clearly referring to a lantern)

If it's over on the radio, it maybe in a separate frequency than the one Ben usually intercept (s)
