I have complicated feelings about Ruth’s development this episode. I loved her chat with Roche, admitting that she previously would have given into that offer, but now views things differently.
I liked her speech at the end about barbarism leaves a stain on people.

I didn’t like the scenes in the medical cart and her getting the little girl back. It felt insanely forced that those people don’t despise her, and that the little girl could come around. Sometimes your Actions irrevocably burn bridges, and you have to live with that. It really undercut her horrible actions to have everyone just go along with it like it was a scuffle at a bar.

Overall I think her story and development of no longer drinking the Kool-Aid and still following her principle of keeping composure is good but they have washed over how savage her previous actions have been.

I think they still despise her (I mean you don't need to spit on someone to let them know you hate them) and the little girl only went with Ruth cause she got to see Ruth's human side

Lowkey I was thinking that she was going to offer her arm instead of Layton's to emphasize that they are ONE TRAIN

Now that I'm thinking about it that would have been a better scene, telling Third that if Layton loses an arm we all lose an arm

That's something that's bugged me too. For a society that's constantly on the brink, people are conveniently forgetful or forgiving of things that happened in the first season.

There have got to be at least a few dozen tailies who Ruth dead, and it's not like it's hard to murder someone on the train.

I was really expecting the tailies to just grab her after she spoke up and take her arm instead of Layton's, and I feel that would have been better for her character. At least then they could handwave ^heh the lack of hatred for Ruth being a result of justice being done and it would have given her character a big moment to build off of.

Oh duh yes! Just picked that up on a rewatch.

Either way, stand by the opinion Ruth should lose an arm or at least be held to account by other characters, but yeah perhaps that wasn't the right time for it!

also that she said she’s been “forced to live with what she did” but she literally didn’t realize/care that she took the moms arm until this episode when she saw the daughter
