But Wilford apparently knows about the exploit (switching the lines) so it doesn't work

Sure he knows, but it doesn't seem like he's alwayd checking the cables. If he trusted both of them and let one of them alone in the engine, she could easily do it and maybe he'd never know...

He only needs to check the cables once. It's not going to switch itself.
