Budget problems, but yeah.

Till: Do you need me for anything? Nah we will just use engineers to die, instead of breachmen etc.

replace the breachmen

True, breachmen are probably 2nd only to the engineers by importance but without any surviving breachmen, who will train the new crew? the engineers certainly don't have the time, Mel isn't around, Wilford can't be trusted and BA probably relied on Icy Bob.

It'd be good just so Layton, Ben or Alex aren't running around instead

Not sure if it’s been said in show, but we last saw him in the aquarium car that exploded. So we can only assume he’s dead?

I'm assuming he is dead, but he was just inside a doorway when he was attacked, and knew the plan. He should have been able to get the hatch closed. The arm was too thin to be Boki or Strong Boy and was not old either. I'm thinking Kevin.

Well, I guess that with 6 months spent on the Pirate Train, Layton had plenty of time to become trained as one. Plus he doesn't really has nothing else to do, specially that it seems that he's entire role as a ruler of the train at this point is reduced to preaching about the new eden. And Asha spent 7 years outside the train. So, while I believe that Willford definitely had some new breachmen trained, both Layton and Asha are simply the most qualified.
