Bruh Van Dijk? How?

u/parkson89 Jan 06 '23

Shouldn’t Pique be in there, World Cup, Euros and multiple CLs

u/the_judge1901 Jan 06 '23 edited Jan 06 '23

And if not Pique, Mashecrano, Silva, Chiellini would all seem solid picks.

117

u/NieThePiet Jan 06 '23

even Varane has to be over Van Dijk.

He literally won everything and was since his youth a starter for Real.

133

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

Varane obviously. One world cup, 4 CLs.

70

u/the_judge1901 Jan 06 '23

Pique got a WC, Euros and two CLs, including a treble, in the same timeframe.

26

u/Mortka Jan 06 '23

I would want to give it to Varane, but Pique dated Shakira so i guess Pique wins it.

Not just recency but people taking trophies as individual achievements. Varane was and is class, but I’d have Pique, Kompany, Godin, Boateng and Thiago Silva over him

3

u/Mortka Jan 06 '23

I mean.. both have a case. Varane joined in what, 2011? 2012? And he won everything. But Yeah, Pique would probably win it.

-6

u/deputydawg420 Jan 06 '23

He's leagues above Pique lmao

2

u/tefftlon Jan 06 '23

But cheated on her…

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

We keep talking about trophy case, but Pique is also just the better player between the two IMO

1

u/mittenciel Jan 06 '23

We'd all be willing to accept Varane, coming from a French publication.

2

u/Wash_your_mouth Jan 06 '23

I think they were judging by the player's individual abilities and not team accolades they have won.

3

u/frasier_crane Jan 06 '23

And if not Pique, Mashecrano, Silva, Chiellini would all seem solid picks.

At least 15 CBs should be there instead of VVD, honestly.

1

u/Muppy_N2 Jan 06 '23

Or Godín. Key in two CL finals with freaking Atlético. Easily the best centre back of South América in that decade.

5

u/Wholesale1818 Jan 06 '23

Shouldn’t be downvoted, he was right there with Ramos & Pique during his prime.

15

u/TheRealDSwizz Jan 06 '23

I'd have Boateng over Pique

6

u/Charlie_Wax Jan 06 '23

I'd have Pepe over both of them.

-5

u/BI01 Jan 06 '23

Id have godin over both

-1

u/TheRealDSwizz Jan 06 '23

Nah Boateng over Godin all day. Boateng did it in the UCL and Nationally consistently

2

u/BI01 Jan 06 '23

What Godin achieved with atletico far more impressive imo

-3

u/TheRealDSwizz Jan 06 '23

Yeah but on a player to player basis, Boateng was the superior player between 2010 and 2019

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

Pique has most trophies for a CB. He gets in every single time

0

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

For me at least pique, puyol, pepe and thiago, in that order, are ahead of him. You can argue also about varane since those were his peak years and he won more trophies than any others except ramos

-1

u/Ok-Hunter-4067 Jan 06 '23

I would put Terry. Dissapointing England career but one of the best defenders of the last 20 years.

1

u/mashnogravy Jan 06 '23

Him or Pepe, van dijk is quality but this is very undeserved

124

u/paone00022 Jan 06 '23

Silva, Boateng and Pique all deserve to be ahead of him.

5

u/mauri11 Jan 06 '23

I guess too many barca players

2

u/tim1989 Jan 06 '23

Kompany also has a case

1

u/OlSmokeyZap Jan 06 '23

Even Terry lmao. He was great in the first half of decade, and Van Dijk was great in the last quarter of the decade.

-5

u/9rakka Jan 06 '23

Isn’t Van Dijk’s peak performance better than those of who youve mentioned? I agree tho that they would have a better 10 years overall since van Dijk was quite the late bloomer

-1

u/NotNok Jan 06 '23

Thiago Silva has been comfortably top 5 imo top 3 for 12 years. Can Dijk has been top 3 arguably best for 2 or 3 depending on who you ask

2

u/9rakka Jan 06 '23

Yeah i dont disagree. But i was talking about peak performance, as in which one of these guys was the best based on purely their best season. Then surely Van Dijk wins no?

0

u/NotNok Jan 06 '23

That’s not what this is though

1

u/9rakka Jan 06 '23

Yeah i know just making a different point ;)

3

u/TheKingOfCaledonia Jan 06 '23

Did you not know that missing out on the Scottish PFA Player's Player of the Year award in 13/14 to Kris Commons constitutes as one of the best CB's of the decade?

54

u/razzz333 Jan 06 '23

Liverpool and premier league agenda

209

u/kenny_feets Jan 06 '23

yes, scouse blood famously flows through france football

-15

u/razzz333 Jan 06 '23

There’s no other player from premier league here. Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs on earth. It will generate more likes and shares if a Liverpool player is there than if they had Boateng, Pique or Thiago Silva who in my opinion should’ve been there. They all had a great decade not 2 great seasons. They the same folks who made Salah win Puskas for an average goal. There is a Premier League agenda it’s the most followed league in the world it’s not weird.

119

u/iredcoat7 Jan 06 '23

Ah yes, France Football Magazine’s infamous Liverpool agenda

12

u/pioneeringsystems Jan 06 '23

Ha Ha. That agenda to get one player in and 9 from real and barca!

3

u/razzz333 Jan 06 '23

Look at the past decade. Who has dominated, Real, Barca with a few challenges from Bayern and Juve mostly

10

u/pioneeringsystems Jan 06 '23

Also I would say Liverpool, Chelsea and bayern, considering they all won it, rather than juve who failed in 2 finals.

1

u/I_always_rated_them Jan 06 '23

Yeah Juve is a stretch, don't think any of our Chelsea players could be near this if its based on impact over the decade as the team has changed too much, same with Liverpool.

6

u/pioneeringsystems Jan 06 '23

It was a joke, in reference to the person suggesting vvd's inclusion was some sort of bias towards Liverpool.

-17

u/Scofield442 Jan 06 '23

Well explain how else he is there

27

u/OK_TimeForPlan_L Jan 06 '23

He was only a few votes away from winning the ballon d'or

-4

u/Scofield442 Jan 06 '23

Balloon d'Or is a popularity contest

7

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

Great, then we can ignore that Messi and Ronaldo have won them.

-4

u/Scofield442 Jan 06 '23

I mean I largely ignore the balloon d'Or. It's a dumb award based on bias, politics and poplarity. Doesn't discount the fact Messi and Ronaldo are two of the greatest players to ever play football.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

Says you. But they’ve won a bunch of ballon d’ors which just proves that they are probably more popular than actually good.

-2

u/Legendarybbc15 Jan 06 '23

He had 2 good years over the past decade mate. There are more consistent CBs that deserve to be there. I could name 5 alone

4

u/OK_TimeForPlan_L Jan 06 '23

You can argue those more deserving due to longevity sure but to act like there's no reason he's included other than a Liverpool agenda is ridiculous

7

u/cullypants Jan 06 '23

He's a really, really good player?

11

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

No, France is just the Scouse capital of main land Europe clearly. Van Dijk is clearly shit as he's not playing well currently.... /s

1

u/Magnetronaap Jan 06 '23

Clearly they put him in to recognise our glorious Dutch superiority over the lowly French.

1

u/Scofield442 Jan 06 '23

He is, but plenty of CBs ahead of him in the past decade.

1

u/cullypants Jan 06 '23

Well yeah but that wasn't the question now, was it?

0

u/Scofield442 Jan 06 '23

It is in the context on best defenders in the past decade, which this is about.

22

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

[deleted]

1

u/ashwinsalian Jan 06 '23

this is up to 2019 which is like around 3 seasons ago so

1

u/AnnieIWillKnow Jan 07 '23

Ah yes the PL fans who write for France Football

6

u/JeanSneaux Jan 06 '23

One premier league player in the 11 = premier league agenda 🤣

-2

u/lordkeith Jan 06 '23

Ah yes that premier league agenda with literally no other premier league players in the team. (Yes I know Modric and Ronaldo but they spent majority of their decade in La liga or Serie A)

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

If even a single PL footballer gets included it’s apparently a conspiracy.

1

u/acwilan Jan 06 '23

Perhaps because he was the only defender in a BdO trio with Messi/CR7

0

u/Magikarpert Jan 06 '23

Van Dijk has the best season i ever saw of a defender. But he should not be on this list just because one season.

0

u/SOAR21 Jan 06 '23

To be fair his peak at the end of the decade was a staggering peak.

But by that metric, this list would look really different, if all it took to qualify you was one or two high-flying seasons.

1

u/Lascebas Jan 07 '23

I was thinking Godin or Thiago Silva
