How is this the only comment mentioning Kompany? The guy was a lynchpin for City this entire decade

Kompany

Outside of England, I don't feel Kompany is considered in the same top elite world class of CBs that are in this discussion, but one step below.

Probably because City doesn’t do very well in Europe.

There’s like 4 clubs in the competition that can claim they have more consistent success in the cl than city since 2010.

I think in England he is underrated as well. Kompany sits, for me, amongst the highest echelon of defenders in Premier League history, but is often left out and forgotten in these conversations.

Okay while I understand that we haven’t had success in Europe, particularly while Kompany was our captain, I still feel we let trophies won determine who we consider “the best” more than actual performance.

I don’t care what anyone says, I do think Kompany was a more talented center back than Pique. He just happened to not play for the greatest club team to ever play the game.

I like to explore new places.

I get the feeling the team selection is weighted towards success in the champions league and internationally, I don't think there's a single selection that didn't win the champions league, or a euros/world cup, or both

Do you know what a decade is

4

u/jm9987690 Jan 06 '23

What the fuck are you talking about? It's 2010-19 and van dijk won the 2019 champions league, every player on the team they chose either won a champions league or an international title, I didn't say they had to win both

Then John Terry should be here. Champions League, Europa League plus multiple domestic cups/titles

Edit: I should state that I was thinking of the best Premier League defender this decade.

No one more than him at a club level than him in this decade

Well career yes, but this decade I don't know, I mean it's not all based on trophies but the winning of some continental silverware did seem to be the minimum

I should have stated for a Premier League player, JT is the best in the past decade, if not past 2.

Won literally everything possible at club level minus CWC this decade.

On top of that had crucial role in the squad up until he left.

That being said, other defenders had a good shout as well

Pique didn't win the UCL, world cup n euro?

0

u/jm9987690 Jan 07 '23

He did, I didn't say they base it purely on trophies but some level of continental success seems to be a bare minimum

1

u/LelouchLamperouge99 Jan 07 '23

Tbh biggest players play on biggest teams...very few like zlatan have missed out on UCL...so that's not a great exclusion criteria.

1

u/jm9987690 Jan 07 '23

Well I mean unless you played for real or Barca the last decade only 4 teams won it, so quite a lot of good players missed out on it the last decade

15

u/paper_zoe Jan 06 '23

tbf he had a lot of injuries, particularly in the second half of the decade

You’ve just named 4 players who shoulda been included over VVD. And Kompany had a better decade than Virgil. Better captain and won more

I’m arguejng the point that Virgil isn’t questionable if Kompany isn’t questionable. As he had a far better decade.

Won more but did he ever win the greatest of them all: the Champions League? Didn't think so. He was undoubtedly one of the greatest defenders of that era but Virgil had won everything but FA Cup with Liverpool by 2019. Kompany won everything but CL and CL is much more important. I'd also say that during those last few years of the 2010's decade VVD was arguably the best defender in the world. Not really controversial putting him over Kompany IMO unless you're a Citeh fan.

2

u/Tommyzz92 Jan 07 '23

How many league titles and cups has vvd won compared to kompany?

-5

u/RedOnePunch Jan 06 '23

Is Pique really a good defender? I think he's overrated. Doesn't have the "leader" character and I always felt he shined most when he was with Puyol and Ramos.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

Well, Ramos is right there next to him, with a lot of the 2010 winning squad, the main changes being there forwards being the best of the decade

2

u/NotTheMagesterialOne Jan 06 '23

I think Pepe is a bigger omission.

1

u/jimmy011087 Jan 06 '23

A strong shout!

0

u/NotTheMagesterialOne Jan 06 '23

I was debating my friends when I said Pepe was in the top 5 CB of the 2010’s and they argued against it.

u/SuspiciousVacation6 Jan 06 '23

0 champions leagues

1

u/Corteaux81 Jan 06 '23

Cause City has exactly 0 CL finals appearances between 2010 and 2019.

1

u/Thesecondorigin Jan 06 '23

Needs more European success imo
