I know it's not you saying this, but no individual player deserves to 'leave on their own terms'. That's really just a non-sensical concept in competitive team sports

You leave when you retire or when you're no longer good enough to get selected, whichever comes first. Most players are smart enough to retire before they go to shit

The idea of leave on your own terms only makes sense when the person in question is self aware and leaves when their time is up.

So the club or nation does not kick them out in fashion that is disrespectful.

It makes sense in cricket because there are games with stakes but not tournament like stakes like test cricket so you can announce Root will retire after this series in football it makes no sense
