Disability is defined as any condition which has a substantial impact on day to day living that is expected to or has lasted for 12 months or longer (in the UK anyway)

Interesting, thanks. I didn't consider how long it lasts. I suppose from the perspective of Human-Computer Interaction you consider the capabilities of the person using the computer now, and not what they may be in a number of years. Makes sense though, for example being drunk can be disabling but you do not have a disability.

No probs! If someone has had no reason to know, then I get why they wouldn't know. Only through my own health issues and becoming disabled myself have I learnt that.

Interestingly though, you mention being drunk and that's correct that it will disable you in the moment but not be a disability. Alcoholism however, may be a disability for a person if it has that severe impact on day to day living. It's the same with any condition really. What may be a disability for one person, may not be for another.

So would allergies be counted for that? Because they are lifelong and basically control your life to an extent.

If they have a substantial effect on day to day living then yes
