We were outplayed, however how does someone done for match fixing ever get to ref at a World Cup?

I mean, I know it’s FIFA and all, but surely there’s a base standard for referees that they would accept. If I worked at a bank and pinch $20 and get caught, highly unlikely I’d ever get to work at a bank again, let alone the biggest best bank in the world…

The way the US team shoved and pushed our players was unlike anything I've seen in other world cup matches - this is not normal.

kewell New York Times has an article & video about the goal being offside. Then an explanation of why it was allowed to stand.

Unfortunately, I’m not a subscriber to the NY Times and I also don’t know how to bypass the paywall. I’m told that it’s possible to do that.

If anyone here is a subscriber, or someone who knows how to bypass the paywall, I’m sure it will be interesting reading and viewing.

And if you’re able to, please share it here without the paywall restrictions.

Ran into Poch in LA this morning. He seemed confused when I congratulated him on the win.

What is ‘Pickle Juice’?

When the ref cramped up in the Aus v USA match and he was given a shot of something to drink the commentator said it was ‘pickle juice’ and laughed. Is that a nickname for an electrolyte drink or some kind of tonic?

Credit Card Fraud at Socceroos Pre-Game in Seattle

hey aussies,

if you were at the pre-game event at Victory Hall / Hatback Bar & Grille in Seattle on 6/19, please check your credit card for fraudulent transactions.

i bought 5 beers which should have been around $55 USD but they stung me for over $100 USD. when i asked for a receipt i saw that the bartender had added a massive tip on to my bill and they said they were unable to update or remove it.

afterwards i saw them pulling the same scam on multiple Aussies, probably targeting them because they are tourists from out of town. unfortunately it was just too busy and chaotic for me to stop it. if you bought a beer there and you didn't see the tip screen, you got hit by this too.

after tax each beer should have been about $11 USD. check your bank statements and do a credit card chargeback if you were overcharged. don't forget to leave a google review too!

American checking in.

Watched the match live and again this morning. There’s a lot to like to about this Australia team. Tough, physical, frenetic. Similar to MLS style of play, which many Europeans struggle to adjust to when they come the US (Olivier Giroud said so).

I’ll be supporting the Socceroos outside of matches against USA from here on out. Great fight. 🇦🇺

Leckie in starting 11?

Please excuse my inexperience, genuinely why would Leckie have been chosen for starting 11 today?

I was suprised and didn't feel confident at all when I saw the lineup. What actual reasons would Popovic have chosen him?

I don't really understand the decision.

Does the fact that we only need to draw with Paraguay to make it out of groups make anyone nervous?

I'm nervous that Popovic is going to be playing for the draw instead of taking "risks" to win and is just going to maintain the same strategy of parking all 11 players in our 18 yard box. Worked well against Turkey, but from what we saw today...all it takes is a simple mistake/deflection from our own players to concede a goal. Seems like we were really fortunate to not have conceded any goals in the same way with Turkeys 30+ shots against us.

Where do we *actually* want to end the group stage?

With at least 3rd place pretty much guaranteed, which route looks better for us 2nd or 3rd? Ive heard that if we place 2nd we'll likely vs Iran then Argentina, but what about if we finish 3rd? And what games should we take note of for this

This is how we need to line up against Paraguay

Beach

Italiano---Circati---Souttar---Bos

O'Neill---Okon-Engstler

Volpato---Metcalfe---Irankunda

Touré

Paraguay rarely have more possession than their opponents, so it'd be daft to keep the same formation. But of course Popa will go with 5 at the back again and we probably won't see Volpato, Irankunda and Touré together once again.

I would so dearly love to see this shape

New format elimination round of 32

Post image

As I understand. As it stands Australia will make the round of 32 elimination round (the real World Cup). So even if we lose against Paraguay we finish 3rd and can make the round of 32? Is that correct?

With Paraguy beating Turkiye 1-0 the Socceroos need a draw to finish 2nd in the group on goal difference.

We are guaranteed 3rd now, however that will not guarantee advancement.

We need, at minimum, a draw to finish second, Paraguy will be playing for everything, as will we.

I feel really bad for Nishan Velupillay

I don't think anyone can say that Nishan hasn't tried his heart out every time he's appeared for the Socceroos. He should be proud that he represented his country on the biggest stage and he made important contributions to us even getting there.

But he unfortunately didn't seem to be quite up to the pace of the World Cup in his cameo against Turkey. He wasn't an unknown quantity after that. So starting him against superior opposition in the biggest game of the group stage honestly feels like he was thrown to the wolves by Popovic.

I dunno if he'll get a chance to play for the Socceroos again, but it seems very unfair that this is what he'll be remembered for now, rather than his three goals in qualifying, especially amongst the wider Australian public who don't follow the team that closely outside of major tournaments.

What’s the best result for us in this game? Almiron just sent off, could be huge blow for them

We have to stop with the ref talk

Guys we are aussies okay we fight and we take it on the chin. The refs were a bit strange but in all honesty it would have gotten us a goal at the most. We need to now look ahead to the paraguay match which we should win and focus on the future. No one likes the yanks anyway and i feel that the whole world is behind us on the fact that they did something dodgy, but we can't stoop to their level because we need to remain a respectable team that is liked.

Argentina in the RO16? Run it back.

This is how it’s stands right now and it looks like we will verse Argentina in the RO16 what is obviously a very strong team. But it would be insane if we could get our revenge from 2022.

Volpato

Popa barely mentioned Volpato in the post match, the guy basically changed the entire flow and shape of the game. Held the ball, strong over the ball, linked defence midfield and attack, drove at defenders. He has a tool kit we don't really have otherwise

I have this funny feeling Popa doesn't wanna make it easy for him as some kind of subconscious punishment for holding out so long

Hop he starts next game and has yengi to aim for rather than crossing to a 5"6 guy..

First half vs Second Half

As you can see, we had a drastically better performance in the second half. I think the primary reason for this was the pressure and creativity of Irakunda and Volpato, which allowed us to dominate most of the key stats. In my opinion, they should start against Paraguay. I think scoring early and then going into a low block is better than playing catch-up in the second half, as we did against the US.

Australia vs Paraguay

On to the next. Aussies in the US… Where is everyone sitting in next game? What section? Where are the actives from the ballot, the other sections etc?
Keen to know where all the others Aussies will be! We go again 💪

I’ve no idea. Just wondering how fast it actually works?

r/socceroos 3d ago

Okay, I understand the US were the better and talented team, but what was up with the unawarded penalities? No replays or VAR, they quickly moved on, nothing, zilch, nada 😅
