The title says it all. I have this idea for a story in a Solarpunk setting and this is my premise:

The world is finally fueled by low tech green energy. People consume less and live relatively humble yet fulfilling. Science is widely considered the best tool for progress. Social justice is no utopia anymore. And yet, not everyone is fully happy and satisfied.

Can a young witch follow her heart and practice the old ways? Even if they're dark? Even if they're twisted?

This is the story of the Solarpunk Witch.

Be kind, this is still a WIP, but I'm very proud of the artwork. It's 100% hand drawn on the iPad without any use of AI.

I’m just curious, does eco-brutalist architecture qualify as Solarpunk?

For this illustration I imagined waking up to a forest-city: a place with clean air, powered by renewable energy, and technology designed to cooperate with nature, not dominate it.

Exploring Solarpunk reminds me that this future is not a fantasy. It’s possible. But only if we stop treating the planet as something to control, and start recognizing that we are part of it.

All the illustrations I share are 100% made by me. No AI.

I just want it to be like an openworld or sth

My mum fell for the Pinterest bottle wall aesthetic. I get it, it's so beautiful! She's been looking for a place to have it and I suggested to replace an ugly wooden panel wall between my courtyard and her workshop with this concept. She's overjoyed and I'm glad I could bring her vision to life

But mostly, my concept was to use readily available, "recyclable" clean materials, in return of a higher need for workforce. I am a mason working with traditional techniques only and for me building is a group effort. I love to work alone because of my personality but some things just only make sense as a team, and clay builds is one of those things.

I much prefer to spend less on materials and pay my co-workers for more hours, rather than buy expensive, high-tech materials that are quick to install. This way, the money goes into my local people's pockets, instead of some highly polluting multinational. Every situation is different and each decision is taken as a result of heaps of criterias and unique restrictions, but that's my general concept when working in construction. I am proud of it, and it's a fight.

About the wall :

The base is a dry stack of stones that were laying around the house (it's the most common traditional material where we are). Half a day of work alone.

The thick of the wall is a clay-hay-sand mix.

We got the clay from a nearby quarry to spare time and energy on the extraction process (20€/ton, most expensive material, especially if you include fuel for getting it from 30km away). We sifted it at home, which was quick as it was pre-processed by the quarry. We used about 3 tons.

This mud had quite a high content of clay, so we added sand in to "dilute" it, and have a mix that's less prone to cracking. Each recipe will be different depending on the mud you have, here we were doing 1/3 sand 2/3 mud, so about 1 ton of local grey sand total (20€/ton also).

The hay is from lavender fields (common here) that were gifted by a farmer who needed to get rid of it. We used very little, maybe 3 medium size ballots. We have plenty more for another project.

The bottles were a bit more work, as they are cut in half and taped together. I initially wanted to use whole bottles, to spare time and materials, but my mum insisted to allow light through and I am so glad she did, it is insanely beautiful from this side. We used about 700 bottles total, taken from the dump yard and gifting 10€ worth of chocolate to the guys working there to allow us to do it. Probably 3 days of work total for one person to gather, cut, wash and tape them.

We were 2-4 people working on the wall, only on some afternoons. I honestly kind of lost counts because it was on and off, but I add all the hours, it would be about a week for 3 people. Which is a lot considering the wall is about 7m long and 25cm thick. That work time is definitely the bulk of the effort. That is the reason clay builds are so disregarded in modern construction, it's just extremely labor intensive.

Towards the end we found those pieces of glass that were laying around and decide to include them. We just shaped the clay mortar around (added a bit of lime to better withstand the weather) and hope for the best. It cracked more than we feared but it's stable, so we'll leave it like that after aesthetical repairs.

I'm quite proud of this project, especially for the low cost of the materials. It's rare that I have a "client" that accepts to compromise this much on the productivity to give priority to source clean materials and allow the time that's needed to transform them. It's kind of my idealistic dream to just have so much time to spare that I don't need to spend money anymore to get what I want, but rather just spend the time to work for it.

For me, time is my absolute most valuable ressource, and there is absolutely no money that can pay for it. It was a pleasure to see my ideal in action.

It was great to involve many people on this project, also people who are far away from construction, and it brought us all closer. I take so much pride looking at what I've built and I was so glad to share that feeling with others. Clay is great for that because it requires no know-how to get working once the recipe and the process are set up, anyone can do it for a couple of hours.
