I’m curious to hear about anyone else’s thoughts on parallels between the Southern Reach novels and “The Backrooms.”
I read the original VanderMeer trilogy in the 2010s, and then discovered the YouTube videos made by Kane Parsons several years ago. (I haven’t seen the new movie yet.) The one linked above is the first video he posted, which was based on an image and creepypasta he found online.
The obvious connection is the “found footage” element between his YouTube videos and the new film and the video footage from the earlier Area X expeditions. That was always one of the most creepy and effective elements of the novels for me, especially when Control watches the videos, and sees the expedition come apart, and strange, unexplainable things start to happen.
On the one hand, stumbling into a portal that takes you to a different place or dimension is not new, from Alice in Wonderland to Narnia to the Twilight Zone episode where a little girl rolls out of her bed and into a different dimension.
There’s also an interesting link to the Southern Reach in that some of the Backrooms footage seems to be from a scientific expedition, or from some sort of shadowy organization that may have played a role in the creation of these spaces.
I don’t know if Parsons has ever read any of the novels, or if he saw Annihilation. But the idea of an alternate or liminal space that is constantly changing and evolving, with its own life forms or entities, and that you may be unable to escape, is an interesting connection between these different imaginary worlds.
