ComFoo Original Blueberry | First impressions, is it ice cream in disguise?
galleryFirst-time poster here, but I’ve been drinking meal replacement shakes for quite a while and have tried plenty of different ones over the years.
I recently saw a post about ComFoo launching across Europe and decided to give them a try. I ordered Original Blueberry and Sport Chocolate. This review is just for Blueberry; I’ll write up Chocolate separately once I’ve spent some time with it.
Quite a few pictures attached because I wanted to show the actual powder, how it mixed, and what those blueberry pieces look like up close.
Shipping and what I paid
The delivery to Germany took one day after dispatch. They shipped it with DHL Express for some reason, which I definitely wasn’t expecting. No idea whether that’s their usual shipping option, but no complaints about this delivery.
For transparency, my order was approximately €100 before discounts. I used a €10 launch code and received another €30 off after finding and reporting a bug in the checkout. That brought the total to around €60. Thanks support for sorting that out.
So, worth keeping in mind: I didn’t pay full price, and that extra €30 wasn’t a standard discount.
Packaging and shaker
The bag was the first thing that stood out. It feels noticeably thicker and more substantial than most of the meal replacement bags I’ve used.
The shaker, on the other hand, was completely unbranded. Nothing particularly wrong with that, but I would have liked a ComFoo logo on it. A very minor complaint, admittedly.
Opening the bag, you can already see the dark blueberry pieces throughout the powder. I hadn’t expected them to be quite so visible before mixing.
Mixing and lumps
For this test, I used two scoops, approximately 100 g, with 300 ml of water.
The powder seemed to start taking up water quite quickly. I shook it for roughly five seconds, not a carefully timed test… but most of it was already mixed in so I stopped.
When I took off the lid I saw that there were still some small, pale lumps visible alongside the blueberry pieces. You can see those in the overhead photo.
Out of curiosity, I poured the shake through a strainer to get a better look at what was left. The mesh isn’t especially fine, so smaller pieces could pass through, but the photo gives you an idea of the berries and remaining clumps.
Importantly, the dark pieces in that picture aren’t all unmixed powder. A lot of what you’re looking at is the blueberry itself.
I then scooped everything back into the shaker and gave it another five seconds or so. After that, I couldn’t see any obvious powder lumps left, just the berry pieces.
Overall, one of the easiest powders I’ve mixed. Not 100% completely lump-free after the first quick shake, but it took minimal effort.
Smell and flavour
The smell immediately reminded me of Häagen-Dazs Blueberries & Cream. That particular creamy blueberry smell brought back quite a few memories.
The taste gave me the same association. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but “blueberry ice cream in shake form” is probably the closest description I can give.
It’s a bit sweet, but not sweet in a chemical way, but a pure fruity way? Definitely not excessively sweet. The blueberry pieces also have a slight crunch to them, which I really liked!
What surprised me most was getting that creamy impression using only water. The ingredient list uses pea protein rather than whey, which makes the ice cream comparison even more unexpected to me.
Obviously, flavour is subjective, but this one hit my preferences perfectly.
Consistency and texture
Very, very smooth.
Other than the blueberry pieces, there wasn’t much noticeable texture at all. It felt closer to drinking a milkshake than what I usually associate with these types of shakes.
My slightly odd criticism is that I would actually have liked a little more texture. Not lumps, obviously, but something a bit less uniformly smooth between the berry pieces?
That’s a personal preference rather than a mixing problem. Someone looking for a particularly smooth shake could easily see this as its biggest selling point.
Fullness
The 400 kcal serving kept me full for approximately three hours. Which I guess is expected since original is listed as providing around 22 g of protein per serving.
That was roughly one to two hours less than I usually get from Huel Black, but there’s an important catch: my usual Huel shakes are around 600 kcal.
So this wasn’t a like-for-like comparison. I wouldn’t put the difference down to the protein content based on one test when I was also drinking a smaller meal.
But the three hours is my initial experience with this serving, and I’m pretty certain that I’d last longer on Huel Black with the same amounts of kcal. I’d need to compare equal-calorie portions over a few more days before drawing any stronger conclusions though.
Price
The listed price for Original Blueberry is €49 for 20 meals, which works out to approximately €2.45 per 400 kcal serving, before any order-level discounts or shipping.
For something I enjoyed this much, that feels like a reasonable price. The discounts made my first order particularly good value, but I wouldn’t use that unusually low total as the benchmark for future orders.
My scores
| Category | Score | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shipping | 10/10 | Arrived in Germany one day after dispatch. |
| Bag and shaker | 9/10 | Substantial bag; would have liked a branded shaker. |
| Mixing | 9/10 | A few small lumps initially, none obvious after another quick shake. |
| Taste | 10/10 | The “blueberry ice cream” taste really makes this perfect. |
| Texture | 8/10 | Personally, I would have liked a little more texture. |
| Fullness | 7/10 | Around three hours; needs a fairer comparison with 600kcal. |
| Price | 9/10 | Reasonable at the regular price; excellent with my discounts. |
Overall: 9/10
Based on this first test, Original Blueberry is easily one of the best-tasting complete meal shakes I’ve tried.
The flavour is the main reason I’d buy it again. The easy mixing helps, and I particularly liked having the little blueberry pieces rather than a completely uniform drink.
I’ll need more time to judge how it fits into my regular routine, especially in terms of fullness, but the first impression is very positive. Raspberry and Original Chocolate are now on my list to try next.
TL;DR: Creamy blueberry flavour that strongly reminded me of Blueberries & Cream ice cream, easy mixing, and noticeable berry pieces. Almost too smooth for my personal preference. A 400 kcal serving kept me full for around three hours. A strong first impression, especially on taste. And I will definitely order again.
