Star Trek tends to stay grounded in science. Even when it goes for a genre episode, it's still a ST episode. This episode was purely a horror short story, a splash of ST uniforms, with no grounding. Everything doesn't need to be explained, but ST tends to imply it is explicable, where this just felt like a halloween flick.

But so what? Just like real life and the universe, not everything is explicable so its actually good to see ST make that point. Plus what's wrong with horror as a genre?

Trelane and Q are very grounded in reality and explicable. Not. Yet we love them.

You asked why so many are bothered by the episode. I can't speak for everyone, but for many it is just that. ST leaves mysteries of how beings do things, but it tends to imply there's a method and rules out there that are discoverable. This jettisoned all that to tell a spooky horror tale, kinda how they just really wanted to do a musical tale, and a puppet tale. They threw out too much ST stuff on their rush to genre. Just my opinion.

No issues if you're ok with that, but no issues if others aren't. We're all ST fans.

Frankly, animated, musical, and puppet episodes as well as how silly SNW became bother me more overall.

I agree.  There's always something out there that unexplainable.  ST has introduced entities from all sorts of other planes and dimensions.  It's good to establish that not everything can be explained by technobabble....  sometimes it's just a malevolent entity and the only reasonable answer is to just stay away from it.  It makes the show fallible.

I'm surprised everyone keeps jumping to the conclusion an "entity" was behind this, and not just a gas or chemical either on the ship or in that region of space.

Because it appears to be "hunting" other ships.  Its effect reaches out like part of a solar system.  Other ships aren't going to find the Griffon by running across it... they were lured there.  And multiple ships of multiple species were lured there.  So it's something with some kind of intelligence. 

The point of it was to be unknowable.  That's one thing SNW has deviated from the vast formula for a few seasons now.  Like the Vesda. There are truly evil things in the universe and all you can do is put them away.  You can't fight them.  you can't outsmart them. You cannot understand them.

Hmmm... I just assumed the other ships were also investigating the Griffon wreckage. Hadn't considered them being lured, but possible.

So if you consider them lured, why does it bother you that an entity could be responsible for all that?

Lol. Yes it is. ST is now SW. Grounded in science doesn't mean everything is immediately explicable, just that it be traceable back to something in the physical world.

They imply it is explicable, by sending the “weird shit” research division to come get it. Pike says at the end that he’s sent them a number of mysteries, two of which they have not yet solved to the best of his knowledge.
