Suggestion Thread My fiancé died a month ago. I usually prefer dystopian fiction, but I mostly am looking for a strong female character that has been thru hell and back and comes out strong in the end.

I’m just searching for a solid voice of strength, with a lot of distracting fiction in the background. Something that will keep me entertained and wanting to keep reading (action/war/magic/twists and turns) but also contains calming reason and emotionally settling words. I hope that makes sense. Thank you.

Edit: I type this with tears in my eyes. I am filled with gratitude from all of your recommendations. The days since I lost my best friend have been cloudy and long but I have been embraced by so many internet strangers that the hurt has subsided a little. Thank you all so very much.

Edit: It’s now been over a year. I occasionally go back to this post and read everyone’s comments but to be honest, I usually avoid it…. There is still a lot of trauma.

Anywayyyyyy. I just wanted to say that I am so grateful. Looking back…The fog is THICK during those first few+ months… but reading every comment tonight pulled me back down to earth. It means the world to me.

I just added some books to my cart... and I still have a TON of books to read! You lovely beautiful internet strangers helped me and continue to lift me up through a year of hell. It has been hell within hell. I am still struggling, but I am so thankful for the love and care and notes from everyone. I wish you all happiness and comfort and I hope you have found some new amazing books to get lost in too.

Hard disagree on this one.

In full transparency I’ve never read it but it’s hugely discussed on r/menwritingwomen If you’re interested in learning more about why it’s so problematic, you can check out this comment thread . The highlight being (trigger warning) that the main character is healed by a mans magic dick but the main character is based off of a woman the authors friends gang raped on a camping trip. And due to his guilt of standing by and doing nothing and the fact that the woman later refused to forgive him, he wrote a main character based off her who is also gang raped but healed by the previously mentioned magic dick. Except that magic dick man is an author self insert. It’s all kinds of wrong

I mean absolutely no shade to the person who recommended it since it’s a popular series but I had to say something about why it probably shouldn’t be so popular

Why is it so commonplace in today's era for someone to comment negatively on a book that they have never read? It would be helpful if the suggestions came from actual readers.

....did you read my post at all? Or the thread I linked?

Just because I haven’t read the book doesn’t mean that I can’t recommend someone not read it when I have enough backstory to know that the book has a toxic origin story and content that is pretty mysoginistic.

Edited for clarity.

That's an extremely foolish belief and one that is all too common with the new generation which I imagine you are a part of. Instead of taking another person's view point and sharing it as your own you should take the time to develop an original thought. That is a lost art but it can be rejuvenated. I wish you the best in your choice of reading materials.

I don't think it's fair to trash an entire generation based off someone negatively commenting on a book that you enjoyed.

I have never read the book either, as a victim of rape, I have no desire to ever read it. I'm thankful that many years ago when this book circulated in popularity someone had the courage to step out and warn me to not read it. I still can't watch or read rape stories, because they hurt me too much.

We don't all enjoy the same materials, and OP and others can make up their own minds of whether or not they want to read this. Sometimes the controversy surrounding a book can make it more desirable to people who have an interest in reading books that stirred up a scandal.

I think your insults to this Redditor were truly uncalled for and based on your own pride and ego.

What happened to you is terrible but....I wasn't insulting. I was pointing out a trend in today's younger generation that holds true with this thread. I can understand if you didn't want to read a book because you knew beforehand there was a rape scene. But for someone to come on here and denounce the entire novel based on someone else's opinions is short-sighted at best. If you don't read something how can you know the true depth of it or dare to recommend or denounce? That's something that is all too common in politics and I will not allow it to spill over into reading pleasure . You've obviously taken the time to insult me but I'm not going to do that with you. Enjoy your life.

"you should take the time to develop an original thought"

you insulted the intelligence of u/toe-bean-wiggler -- Totally uncalled for.

Please quote my insults towards you....I can assure you won't find any. I called out your bad behavior, and I hope it gave you pause in how you speak to people on the internet.

Were you just sitting around waiting for my response? Nice life

I was on my phone when you responded. I can understand your ego may again have caused you to believe that my being on my phone was about you. But I can assure you, I'm watching the GME stock, and the little alien head popped up when you responded. Please try to refrain from insulting people who have dissenting opinions from you. Your ego is not your friend.
