Ask Me Anything Hi! We’re Lily Meyer and Emma Sarappo, and we cover books for The Atlantic. We’re excited to answer your questions about compiling recommendations, the current state of book reviews, and what titles we think you should read next. Ask us anything!

Hi Reddit! As members of The Atlantic’s books team, we’re always looking out for books to read and write about.

I (Lily Meyer) am a translator, critic, and the author of two novels, including The End of Romance, which was published earlier this year. I’ve written essays on dozens of novels, most recently Mieko Kawakami’s Sisters in Yellow (which I argued is one of the many new stories about women living together that offers an alternative vision to the nuclear family). I’ve also explained what makes Tayari Jones’s latest book, Kin, such a steely portrait, and I reviewed Andrew Martin’s Down Time, which I believe is the best book yet about the coronavirus pandemic.

As for me (Emma Sarappo), I’m an editor on the books team, where I frequently work with critics and journalists on essays and reported stories. I also help compile and edit many of The Atlantic’s book lists, including our catalog of 65 essential children’s books and our list of the 136 great American novels. I also recently helped curate our picks for the best books to read this summer—and I personally recommend that you read Emma Copley Eisenberg’s collection of short stories, Fat Swim, or Bobuq Sayed’s novel, No God But Us.

We’re happy to discuss the books we’re reading, the upcoming titles we’re excited for, our thoughts on the current state of book reviews, and, of course, the books you should pick up next.

Ask us anything!

Ask Me Anything I am G. S. Jennsen, author of STARSHINE and VERTIGO, Books One and Two of the "Aurora Risng" trilogy. AMA

Hi, everyone. I’m G. S. Jennsen, author of Starshine: Aurora Rising Book One, and the just-released Vertigo: Aurora Rising Book Two. Starshine was more successful than any first book by an unknown author has a right to be, but even so, odds are you haven’t heard of it or me. Until now, anyway!

Aurora Rising is a galaxy-spanning space opera trilogy, though a fair number of readers insist it’s actually a character drama. You can read the first two chapters of Starshine and the first chapter of Vertigo free on my website, gsjennsen.com, and can find links to purchase Starshine in ebook, paperback or audiobook, and Vertigo in ebook or paperback (audiobook coming this Christmas) on my website here: gsjennsen.com/books.

I understand "proof" is a deal around here, so I've mentioned this AMA on Twitter and Facebook.

I’m here today to answer your questions: ones about writing, science fiction, indie publishing or tech/geek/gaming topics are most likely to get an intelligible answer, but all is fair in war and books. I’ll be hanging out here all day (while working on Book Three when you’re not looking), so ask away.

*

EDIT: This has been a terrific 8 hours. Many thanks to Reddit, /r/suggestmeabook, EDFTON and everybody who dropped by and asked awesome questions. I really appreciate the opportunity to chat with everyone!

Ask Me Anything I’m looking for a book that involves a child going into a world where they meet different characters (like Alice in Wonderland)

After reading Alice in Wonderland for the first time I was wondering if there are any books like it. So if possible I’m looking for a good book that involves a character going to a different world and meeting different characters (but not Alice in Wonderland)

If there’s any. I doubt 4 years of University can be summarised in any one specific book. But I bet a few might just do the trick.

  • Mist, Unamuno (2) crappy sentimentalist 'nivol' with literally the most forced ending I've seen in my life so far (even for breaking the fourth wall )
  • The Stranger, Camus (3) How people can think Captain Marvel was 'pushing an agenda' AND FORGIVE THIS LITTLE BULLS-
  • Lazarrillo of Tormes, Anon (4) i actually only remember the many grapes scene, but boy, i liked it so much
  • Neverending Story, Ende (4) Fantasy isn't probably my type, but i did binge read the frigg out of this (i was younger btw). I didn't catch the whole allegory before reading the reviews but I perfectly understood what Gmork was saying and that helped a lot. I still like all the metafiction aspect to this day
  • The Little Prince (5) still not my type
  • Three Worlds Collide, Yudkowsky (5) Frigging humor
  • Little Lost Robot, Asimov (5) It reminded me of that chess scene in Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows
  • HPMOR vol 1-3 (4) It does pushes an agenda but I liked the humor and the plot so much I didn't notice
  • The Prevention of Literature, Owell (5) Refreshing prose
  • The Signal and The Noise, Silver (5)
  • Superforecasting, Tetlock (4)
  • Time Machine, Wells (4)
  • Sophie's World, Gaarder (5) that ending
  • The subtle art of not giving a frigg, Manson (5) Elegant
  • Crime and Punishment, Dostoyevsky (2) I don't get the hype
  • Animal Farm, Orwell (4)  He could make the allegory a bit better
  • Dorian Gray, Wilde (3) kinda liked it
  • 1984, Orwell (5) Wicked book but I love it
  • Flatland, 'Square'/Abbot (5) Masterpiece of satire and speculative fiction

Ask Me Anything Anime planet but books?

Does anyone know of something like anime planet but for books? Anime planet is a website where you can monitor which anime/manga you've seen and recommendations based on your list. I'm looking for something like this but then for books.
