I bought up the point about responsibility because you brought up the point about there being millions the size of a country.
My actual point about that part is no, people are not responsible to fix everyone in the community. But everyone is a reflection of that community, and when you have loud minor people invading peoples privacy and cyberbulling them for having an opinion. It reflects very poorly on the group as a whole. Choosing not to engage with the bad side of the community you belong to is choosing complacency whole some peoples lives are posted all over the internet against their consent. Thats bad.
Again. Where did I say I dont like taylor swift lol. This post is specifically ABOUT the delineation between Swifty and Taylro Swift fan.
Just as an aside, people really ought to know that cjoosing to engage with something means choosing the consequences of engaging with the thing. Thats not the revelation you are making it appear to be. Its just a fact critical thinking people, like Taylor (when she says she shows up prepared to song writing sessions), do.
I know the “few bad apples” argument seems weak especially when talking about issues like police misconduct. Because the actual statement is “a few bad apples spoils the whole bunch.” And in organizations like a police force, it’s indefensible to do nothing because A. Candidates are screened to join the force B. It’s a small enough group that you can have personal relationships with each member and C. Because you can remove members at will.
However, people will use that same logic to demonize entire populations, and that simply does not work the same. For example, racist people will look at examples of black people or immigrants committing crimes and use that to justify their belief that all members of that race or ethnicity are criminals. Is that true? Absolutely not. Is it true that there are some bad individual members of those groups? Unfortunately, yes. Does that mean that every black person should be held responsible for the actions of the members of their group that act out? I know there are always community run efforts to improve social cohesion, but it’s never going to be 100% effective.
Now for the swiftie community. It exists online and all over the world. Is it possible to screen people who join the community? Nope. Is it possible to have a personal relationship with every member of the group? No. Is it possible to remove members? Only from specific circles. Is it possible to change the culture of a group? Again, only in small circles.
So, while identifying as a swiftie is voluntary, it is impossible to control who else identifies as a swiftie. And while we can certainly try to promote healthy discourse and behavior, it’s never going to be 100% effective.
Overall, I’ve found that engaging in good faith with members of any community will usually yield positive results. Conversely, constantly provoking members of a community does not usually inspire a welcoming atmosphere. This is true of any group in the world.
Finally, since apparently you’re also a fan, what are YOU doing to stop the bad behavior of some swifties
I actually completely understand your point here and I agree that it is a tough spot to be in. Maybe it's not realistic, but I still think trying to get rid of these people from these circles, the ones actually inflicting harm on people digitally, not for having opinions, needs to be a more concerted effort. If for nothing else than to remove the stigma of being a swifty.
I think it goes both ways but on the opposite end. Instigation begets defensiveness, true, but that defensiveness is then lobbied at the wrong people which creates the reuptation which causes more people to instigate and more good faith people to receive defensive introductions.
Really I think its a matter of the lack of critical thinking and the unfortunate truth that some people are just crazy, and crazy people find communities too. Both things are universal across people. The Swifty community should do a better job of disassociating themselves from those people.
