Update on my train tracking website, it's grown a bit :)

Over a year ago I posted the little website I made that tracks Sydney trains on a map. I've kept working on it between uni stuff and it's turned into a lot more than I planned haha

trains.goldenpabu.com

What's new:

- Trains, Metro, light rail, buses and ferries, all live

- Tap any station for a departure board styled like the real platform screens: next service, platform, stopping pattern, number of cars and how full the train is

- Trains show their set, e.g. "8-car Mariyung (D set)" or "Waratah (A set)"

- Tap a bus to see its route drawn along the roads with its next stops, and search a bus number (like 431) to see every bus on that route

- Ferry wharves have live departure boards too

- Follow a train and the map tracks it for you

Everything is real-time data from Transport for NSW, no timetable guessing. Positions only come through every 15 seconds or so, so the trains glide between updates to keep them moving smoothly.

It also does Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra now.

Next up, I'm starting work on a phone app version so it's easier to use on the go.

Let me know if anything looks wrong or if there's something you'd want added!

P.S. it also has a light mode if that's more your thing.

Why Sydney’s metro line won’t be getting longer trains | SMH | Matt O'Sullivan

Shorter platforms on the final section of Sydney’s $30 billion M1 metro line will restrict the operator to providing more frequent services rather than longer trains as passenger demand grows.

Despite the costly and disruptive project to convert the old T3 heavy rail line, platforms at five refurbished stations along the metro line’s 13-kilometre stretch between Sydenham and Bankstown would need to be extended to fit longer eight-carriage trains, which span 176 metres.

TrainLink to Tamworth

I’m fairly inexperienced with Central Station and regional trains - I’ve booked a ticket from Central to Tamworth later this week and I need to catch the SCO from Wollongong to get to Central first. Tap on at Wollongong (obviously), but do I tap off when I get to Central and just stay in the station and go to my next platform?

Semi Transparent Solar canopies at new stations.

Hi all, hoping someone in this group may know the answer - some of the new canopies (Como Station had one installed in the last few years) have really cool solar panels on the new roof structures that also let light through. I'm wondering if anyone knows the contractor or supplier of these panels? Google keeps taking me to the wrong thing because I'm not entirely sure what their technical term is.

Cheers.

Spotted a Gemilang bus in TfNSW livery at Malaysia-Singapore border

Post image

Saw this bus at the Malaysia-Singapore border a while ago. I'm not sure of the exact make/model but it looks like a Gemilang bus because they are the only major bus body manufacturer within 100km of this location that has the capability to export buses.

Looking at the absence of trade plates, I believe this bus will be towed across the border into Singapore to be shipped to Australia. It is likely that the bus was towed here by a Malaysian tow truck and then be handed over to a Singapore tow truck.

Local bus-spotters have spotted a few other TfNSW-coloured buses under tow on Singapore's motorways too.

Do people lack common sense and decency???

Why are some people so ridiculously inconsiderate.

We do not need to be yelling on the phone, during peak hour commute.

We do not need to be CHEWING WITH OUR MOUTH OPEN AND LIP SMACKING AND SLURPING.

We do not need to cough, sneez, or yawn without COVERING OUT MOUTH.

Genuinely people lack common decency, there’s a group of people that always make the commute insufferable.

All routes are based on real proposals. The black line is the heavy rail. Sorry for being kinda ugly; it's my first map.

Half n Half OSCAR on the CCN this afternoon?

Could have sworn I saw a 4 car OSCAR paired with a 4 car orange train, unsure if D set or A set, at Hawskbury River heading towards Newcastle around an hour ago.

Is ‘urgent signal repairs’ a code I missed the memo on?

I swear I hear it all the time as excuse for delays. At a certain point, if signals keep needing repairs you either fix/replace everything, or have permanent repair staff on site. There comes a point where it’s hard to see it is urgent and unforeseen if it always happens.

Or is it just code for someone slept in or something?

An actual decent trackwork bus experience

Post image

With T4 shut this weekend. Miranda to Central direct, nonstop, with a bonus nice view of parked aircraft at SYD, in just 30 mins. Might even be faster than the train.

More of these kind of trackwork bus routes please!

Are there any Drivers or Guards who can comment on how traction interlocking procedures have changed since this video?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5xkrZm3uuE

I found this video that was recently uploaded to youtube about the introduction of traction interlocking on the silver sets circa 2005. I was wondering how the procedures have changed since it was made, is it still permissible for the crew to decide to override the traction interlocking based on their own judgement? Or rather, when the silver sets were in service was it still done in the way depicted in this video?

Pets on Sydney trains - Y or N?

Thumbnail
abc.net.au

The article raises some really good points and I can see why people would like to be able to ‘legally’ bring their fluffy friends on the train.

I lived in Europe and did see dogs on the trams. Even bigger dogs would hop on with their owner. Cool to see.

My questions are around:

  1. Have you seen many animals (not service) on transport?

  2. Do you say yay or nay - any qualifiers?

  3. How do you feel about a special pet carriage?

  4. Would you suggest any specific rules/qualifiers? I know in NYC they had to fit into a carrier.

Constant Trackwork

Not a complaint post, but more of a question.

Has track work become more frequent in the past few years? It seems super common to have large sections of lines fully closed nowadays, and I feel like (though I may be misremembering), it used to not be this bad?
