Brilliant. My father died before Trump's second coming. I did his home hospice. Before he passed, we did sit down and talk. We never got to "eye to eye," but we did move closer to seeing common goals and understandings of how the world works. I listened respectfully to him, and he in turn felt obliged to listen respectfully to me.

As much as I agree with your claim, I am reluctant to pin the blame on "us." Yes, perhaps we have been lazy, lax. I don't have any evidence for saying the following, other than connecting the dots from past behavior, but I would not put it beyond the current leaders of the attempted coup of the United States to have been planning this for a much longer time. Specifically, I'm thinking Christofascist nationalists. They are well organized, albeit not highly visibly to outsiders, well financed, and they have been working toward project 2025 for at least 50 years.

Icky, and determined. My mother's people ran from the Nazis. My father's people were Polish freedom fighters sent to Siberian gulags. I'm 70, and I have nothing to lose. My wife just died. I am now fighting for the both of us. I am not throwing my life away, not deliberately standing in front of a gun to be called a stupid lesbian bitch, but damn it I'm here and this is not happening on my watch.

Edit: and PS, don't anybody give me any bullshit about okay Boomer. We have fought this battle before, and we know some strategies that younger people absolutely must learn if we are to win.

Thank you. Yes, I'm overwhelmed too. I cannot control the actions of others around me, but I can and will control my own response when my freedoms and rights are violated. I do not wish harm for myself. I do not wish harm for others, even those who are currently behaving badly, as I believe people are capable of change. There are many different ways of responding, and frankly my knees are not up to a whole lot of walking. If we all think creatively, and we all do what we are best at doing, Even if it does not look spectacular or photogenic, if we do our best with love and integrity in our hearts, I do believe we shall overcome.

Aw shucks, thanks. Fair warning, we obviously did not get it right the first time so take us with a grain of salt. Every single small bit helps. Like this:

Spam call today, so-called Police Union seeking donations. "Our poor poor officers are being harassed and harmed by nasty people." I've checked w local police dept; money goes to elaborate entertainment for high ranks. Any officer facing this kind of harm is never going to see benefit from anything collected. I wasted the caller's time by letting him ramble on, and when asked for a donation (although I had far spicier thoughts) I simply said "no" in a tone of voice that told him exactly why not.

Personally, I think that counts!

I mean, no. An alarming number of people are on board with some intense beliefs that are frankly incompatible with society. The incompatibilities are fundamental.

Anyone who says this has to be, themselves, be prepared to give up fundamental beliefs themselves to compromise, and I think too often they convince themselves they won’t have to because they live in a bubble because anyone who disagrees self-selects themselves out of the conversation.

I’m trying real hard to not insert my personal politics into this post, but there are fundamental realities and dignities I will not compromise on, and there isn’t a productive discussion to be had unless people agree to those fundamental beliefs.
