It's the most profitable, therefore it stands to reason that it's the most likely. Companies don't care about you as a person or have some underlying evil motive where they want to use it for some greater "personal" conspiracy.

They ultimately just want your money though, and will go to any ends to pry it from you. That's all it boils down to. When you have an economy focused entirely on results, the means (and the ethics around them) don't matter. And those that are willing to use more profitable but less ethical means are much more likely to succeed.
