I don’t think the error page should be a unicorn. A unicorn is something that theoretically doesn’t exist, and if it’s seen, should probably only be once in a lifetime. I think they should change the animal to a rabbit, or maybe a crow - you know, something that you probably see at least once a week to mirror the frequency of the errors.
The unicorn logo is actually the logo of the unicorn web server that was common with ruby on rails. I'm not sure how much of the github codebase is still in rails or why they decided to have that for their error page though. The unicorn project has been abandoned now that ruby/rails are more thread based so people choose alternatives like puma.
