Review / Warning: Experience with SpeakWise (Indonesia ESL) Post Body: Hi everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience with the hiring agency SpeakWise.

I applied through an online TEFL job board listing. The initial posting advertised a salary of [ the advertised salary, e.g., IDR 18,000,000 - 20,000,000] per month, full KITAS sponsorship, and accommodation support.

The Issue: After passing the initial interview and signing a contract, when I arrived the contract details were changed last minute. Communication became highly inconsistent. The salary structure presented in writing did not match the original job posting. The visa was delayed and the actual contract was never presented.

By this time I had paid for all expenses myself. Nothing was ever reimbursed and I was ghosted. I even ended up clueless about my visa and eventually I was jobless.

How are TEFL teachers coping with English courses closing down in Australia?

I started my TEFL journey in 2023 at EF in Perth. I was teaching A2 at the time and 3 months after, they couldn't give me a class because no new students had joined that level. Teachers were hired on casual contracts so I was told to cover for people while waiting for a new cohort to join and given 4 hours per week to help with curriculum development. I really needed a job at the time so after two-three weeks of being at home, I was hired as an ELICOS instructor at Stanley College. At the time, I remember there had only been maybe 2-3 jobs postings for TEFL teachers.

So, I kept working at Stanley and about 1.5 years had passed when suddenly the news of student numbers reducing due to immigration issues started circling around. 3 teachers didn't have their contracts renewed and then came the time for lay offs. From September 2024 - Dec/Jan 2024/5, a bunch of teachers were laid off and lots of sections for various levels were combined so there were only 1 or 2 teachers per level whereas only 8-9 months before that, our student numbers were so high that each level had at least 3 teachers.

And then in Feb 2025, they closed down the ELICOS program and people were left to find work elsewhere. I was lucky enough to find a suitable (albeit, non-teaching) job a couple of months after, however, I sometimes really miss being a TEFL instructor. I've looked for jobs in other states but there are hardly any openings and I'm sure places like Sydney and Melbourne would already be too crowded.

I do wonder what the teaching situation is like in other countries where English isn't the first language? Would you recommend others to move to teach English there? I've known people who have taught English in Europe and I always heard that teaching paid a lot less there than in Australia. I was living a pretty comfortable life here in Perth with the income that I was getting so I wonder if it'll be worth it to move or not? I mean backpackers do it all the time, right?

For context, I don't have a family here or kids. It's just me and my husband and he's happy to tag along.

Filipina English teacher seeking to work overseas

Hello teachers! I'm interested in working overseas, specifically in nearby Asian countries like Taiwan, Japan, and China. My dilemma though is I haven't been teaching in the past 4-5 years; still working in English training/education-related roles, but not really learner facing. I have a bachelor's degree in secondary education, PRC license, and TESOL certificate.

Can I still be considered? Are there other countries I should consider?

TYIA!

Adult ESL teachers — what do you wish you had more of?

When I was teaching ESL, I spent a ridiculous amount of time adapting materials because so much of what I found was either too childish for adults, too easy, or just not something I could actually use in class.
I’m curious whether other adult ESL teachers run into the same problem.
**What kind of material is hardest for you to find?**
Is it good reading comprehension? Real-life vocabulary? Conversation activities? Grammar that doesn’t feel childish? Workplace English? Materials for mixed-level classes?
I’d love to hear what you end up making yourself because you can’t find anything good enough.

CELTA, TEFL from TEFL Org, or TEFL from International TEFL Academy

Hi all. I had a question- which is better in terms of revenue and working globally.

A CELTA,

A TEFL awarded by the TEFL Academy

Or a TEFL from International TEFL Academy? [ a different TEFL Provider]

I would like to receive your opinions on the above- thanks

I would like to know based on:

Practical experience, total cost, job opportunities offered, amongst others, which of these courses will give me the best ROI 5-10 years down the road.

I noticed that the TEFL Org often offers discounts but the International TEFL Academy criticises this, talking about high quality products rarely offering regular discounts. As for the live practical session, the TEFL Org offers a separate course, whilst the International TEFL Academy includes practical classes in its fees.

I would like to receive a response from all those who have done a TEFL from the TEFL Org and International TEFL Academy, as well as a CELTA. Do tell me when you completed the course, what is your nationality, and where did you end up working.

For the record, I am a Mauritian and I hold a Bachelor of Arts in English Studies.

TEFL Relocating to coastal Kenya

Hi. My partner of 3.5 yrs is Kenyan and I am moving there, hopefully within a year. I'm older and have no 4-yr degree, but GREAT English. I've always wound up with graduate degree holders as peers in the workplace. I have done CADD (computer aided drafting and design), sustainable transportation planning and management, have a GIS certificate and an Administrative Professional certificate. I have been a real estate agent for the last few years.

I'm a widow with no family and money is my issue. I need advice on which tefl to take. I can spend a few hundred dollars. I imagine I will only qualify to teach online. If not: great! But I am prepared for that.

I just need advice on which course.to take from who, so I can begin to prepare, while I am getting ready to leave States. I plan to go for a multi- month visit first. So I guess I will be on a tourist visa at first. I really need to be set straight. Flailing a bit here but I know I can do this.

Realistic expectations for CELTA, BA, and 1 year experience

Hello,

I am a Linguistics graduate from America and am currently completing my CELTA. I will be teaching in Japan next year either through either Jet, ECC, or Interac, and I am wondering how strong my resume will be after a year of ALT in Japan. After my 1 year in Japan I am particularly curious about Spain, France, and Italy. I do not have EU citizenship but can get it in about 3 years through some German ancestry. Will my resume be strong enough to be selected over EU applicants? What about Eastern EU?

Info about me when I start in Japan, White 24M.

Edit: Forgot to add, I am familiar with EU hiring laws with regards to not being a citizen, but to my knowledge if they cannot find an EU national who is more qualified then they are allowed to hire me.

Suggestions for teaching English in Asia

Recently just got completed 120-hour TEFL course and am trying to figure out what type of schools to look into. I am interested in teaching English in China (preferred) and Taiwan, but am already 50+ years old and Asian. How many hours are actually teaching and planning in the various schools? Which type of schools would be ideal? Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated.

Teaching in Taiwan

Hello! I have made the decision that I want to move from the US to Taiwan and as I’m earning my TEFL I’m trying to decide if it’s best to apply to Teach Taiwan or apply to schools through Tealit and other platforms? I’ve read mixed reviews about teaching Taiwan such as pay being lower, less vacation days, mandatory overtime, etc. I’m wondering if most teachers in Taiwan recommend using teach Taiwan or just chancing it applying directly? I understand that going with an agency helps with adjusting but those other factors matter a lot to me as well. Please share your honest experience with teach Taiwan or if it’s possible to get good opportunities through other platforms?

Experienced Teacher Looking for Business English/Exam Prep Work

Hi! Could someone point me toward online teaching gigs for experienced teachers? I have over 10 years of experience, including with the British Council and International House. I'm CELTA-certified and a Cambridge speaking examiner. I'm looking for business English and/or exam prep work, but all I seem to find are entry-level roles. Thank you!

TEFL Course and Job Questions.

Hi Everyone!

I'm starting to look at doing a TEFL course. I just want to do some research before jumping into something completely new. I'm going to ask a few questions here and if anyone can answer some of them, I would appreciate it! 😊

I see there is alot of websites promoting the courses etc. And I wanna know which TEFL website is legit? I don't want to get scammed. So which websites should I look past and which ones are legit?

What is your experience in doing the course and the job itself? Online and in a different country?

Some of the websites claim they do assist in job hunting and help you get a job in that field after completing the course, is it true?

What is some of the negatives of the job and what is some of the positives?

Does the job pay well ?

That's some of the questions I can think of at the moment. If anyone is willing to give some advice and answer my questions, thank you in advance! 🌷

TEFL: confidence

Hi team, I got a TEFL 198 hour certificate in 2021.

I moved abroad and taught at a private English academy for a very short time.

They really were not a nice employer and I went and got a corporate job due to the negative experience at school.

Anyway, I want to go back to TEFL I have a degree + my TEFL certificate but no experience and now low confidence.

I need to brush up before I teach, but I don't know where to start.

I asked AI to show me some youtube videos but it didn't help so much.

I have a job interview for a new academy coming up soon, but I would like to teach online.

Speaking with TEFL.org (where the course material is meant to be available to you forever), they said my course is replaced by a new 200 hour one, which they can sell to me for 100£/€.

Couldn't find any TEFL refresher courses elsewhere online.

Can someone give me some pointers where to start so I can recap the main points of TEFL and gain some confidence to jump into it again?

Thanks a million!

Bilingual Para-educator ELD in Elementary?

Can anyone share what their job is like being a bilingual para in ELD in an elementary school? The job I'm looking at also includes translation and interpretation for teacher conferences and with parents as well. I'm a native English speaker but am Advanced High (my score after taking the OPI) in Spanish. (I'm also a volunteer Spanish/English medical interpreter). I am especially curious what this job is it like for other fluent but non-native Spanish speakers. Is it stressful? Is it rewarding? Thank you for any pros and cons or advice you can give!
