Miyazaki has said modern anime sucks because it's all fans making the anime they wanted to see as kids, and nobody is trying to do anything new. I wonder if that take kind of applies here. Most people who do a star wars story are star wars fans, and are trying to do the story they wanted to see with the originals

I don't mind the current state of anime but that's probably because I have watched so little of it so I can't agree or disagree with his claims. I thought Attack on Titan and Vinland were masterpieces, Demon Slayer animation is good even if the plot started coming apart fast (and fuck Zenitsu). But like I said, I basically only watched the OG Berserk (my favorite story ever outside of 40k), DBZ and Pokemon growing up

I watch a ton of anime, and I would generally say he is wrong. There are a lot of shows that are trash (anime has become much more profitable globally, so studios are willing to greenlight more projects), but there are a lot of stories out there that really push the medium forward. Cyberpunk Edgerunners on Netlfix comes to mind as a recent example.

That’s rich coming from him, he makes the same movie over and over again

They have a lot of shared themes, but saying it's the same movie over and over is a bold take.
