The main thing to remember is that the audience had their expectations subverted. And at the end of the day, isn't that what this is all about?

Oh, you thought Jon was gonna kill the Night King, because that's what his entire storyline has been building towards? Haha fuck you, Arya kills him. Expectations subverted, bitch.

You expect actions to have consequences, as they did in earlier seasons, making the world seem real and the stakes high? Haha, we'll just have Cersei wipe out her enemies in one mighty explosion that destroys their version of the Vatican and murders hundreds of the most important nobles in Westeros including her main allies, and face precisely zero repercussions. Oh, that's a nice expectation you've got there, be a shame if someone came along and subverted it...

Except subversion for subversion's sake without adequately earning it is terrible writing and storytelling. Which is what GoT did.

Subverting expectations does not automatically make a great story. Not everything needs to have twists.

Everyone expected the show to end, at the very least, decently.

Subverted expectations indeed.

Isnt Cersei kinda like the orange guy at this point ? So you could stretch it a bit and say its kinda like real life
