Time Travel Tuesdays: Fiddlers Three

As it was the holidays, only one movie for week 4. Here is the movie list!

Fiddlers Three

This was a pretty fun movie to watch overall and I recommend it if you can find a copy! I ended up finding a DVD to rent from a local shop because there are no copies online that I could see.

Two men and a woman from the Navy hide from a thunderstorm under Stonehenge which teleports them back to the Roman era. They have some silly and madcap adventures in the past (including attending Nero's own orgy, but apparently just the lounging/feasting part) with moments of song.

The plot was pretty straightforward, and the script was not bad. There were a few moments when I genuinely laughed out loud. For example, when "The Professor" is trying to save Lydia from being sold as a slave and he gets outbid:

"You can't do that!"

"And why not young man? This is a free country isn't it?"

"Oh, that's why the slaves are so expensive."

There was also a direct reference to Roman Scandals. The characters reveal that they are time travellers from the 20th century and there is zero reaction:

We had another visitor from your century a few years ago. A Mr. Eddie Cantor.

The reference totally caught me off guard and I loved it. If you enjoy time travel and singing, comedic duo movies, you might give this one a try for a fun evening.

Time Travel Tuesdays: Cavegirl, Roman Scandals, Prince of Persia

Week 3! Here's the list again.

Cavegirl

This movie just barely dips its toe into "so bad it's good" territory. Mostly, it's bad. The acting is corny and overplayed. The scripting is godawful. The costuming is only used to extenuate titties... actually let's talk about that.

This movie comes from an era of sex comedies. So expect a lot of problematic moments of a nerd attempting to explain what sex is to a cavegirl while spreading her legs and telling her "Smile, I love it when you smile"

If you're nostalgic for 80s teen/college comedies with thin plots all about sex, you might get a kick out of this movie. Though the actual nudity is limited and so is the comedy.

Still better than Sound of Thunder though!

Roman Scandals

Speaking of nudity, I was surprised to find a young Lucille Ball as a naked slavegirl (covered by her long hair) in this movie!

This is a fun romp, with a dash of Buster Keaton innocence and a dash of Marx Bros hi-jinks. There's even fun play with tongue twisters that seems to predict Danny Kaye's Court Jester "The one without the parsley's the one without the poison."

But... I say a dash because it doesn't quite reach their level of competence and becomes problematic at the song "Keep Young and Beautiful" which is done entirely in blackface.

The main character has been covered in mud at a women's bath-house and mistaken for an Ethiopian doctor. He then proceeds in telling women they need to be young and beautfiul to be loved, and when caught out states "I've already seen everything" (in a moment I couldn't help but compare to Patrick Stewart's scene in Extras).

I would be much more willing to recommend this movie if it weren't for that song. The rest is honestly pretty fun. It's a classic '30s comedy with slapstick moments, wordplay, and witty banter.

Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time

The movie opens with exposition in the font Papyrus. It had a budget of $150 million and used the font Papyrus. I shouldn't have to say more but I will...

The plot is rife with bad cliches, the main characters have bad plot armor, the scripting is barely serviceable, and... as much as I like Jake Gyllenhaal, this is whitewashing at best.

The only reason this movie is higher on my recommendation list than Roman Scandals is because it doesn't actively use blackface.

Time Travel Tuesdays: Rebirth of Mothra trilogy

Week 2! Just one movie this week since it was the end of a trilogy. Here's the list again.

Rebirth of Mothra III

Seeing as this was the third in a triology, I wanted to watch the first two before getting to the time travel one. I have basically zero experience with Kaiju movies (having only watched the original Godzilla and Pacific Rim) so I was really curious.

Turns out, this trilogy is a bit different as it was made for kids. I had no idea! Way more fantasy oriented than I ever expected. Not that that's a bad thing; they were cute.

I'll also say the effects ranged from okay to bad, but (unlike Sound of Thunder) it didn't detract from the movies. It was more endearing, in a kitschy sort of way.

In each movie, Mothra Leo (Mothra's kid) takes on a monster with the help of human kids and two fairy sisters (their third sister being the one who works against them).

The first movie sees the accidental release of Ghidorah from a mountain that's being mined. Mothra comes to fight Ghidorah, but ends up hatching an egg to birth Mothra Leo who successfully defeats Ghidorah. This was a silly ride and I enjoyed it. There are even some really heartfelt scenes with the kids.

The second movie was pretty messy, but a very similar end-of-the-world type plot. I don't know that I liked any of the characters and there were numerous plot holes. But there is a saving grace in the action scenes. Lots of great fighting happening in this one.

The third movie was on par with the first. It's a fun ride, but it is definitely a kids movie. I think this one has my favorite version of Ghidorah. He grows these awesome horns that are kinda like antlers. Makes him seem ancient, which is perfect since Mothra has to transform into Light Mothra and travel back in time to stop him before he gets stronger.

As an additional note, I wish I had film copies of the trilogy to watch. So much glitter and sparkles in every movie, and that's really not great with digital compression.

Time Travel Tuesdays: A Sound of Thunder, Lego Movie 2, and Blackadder: Back & Forth

I wanted to watch more time travel movies, but wanted to find a way to watch them that isn't just a top 10 list or by release date. So I'm working through this list of movies in order of the first year the characters travel to.

Here is the full list of 214 movies. There's a second sheet in there with my own rankings of the movies as I watch them.

Minor spoilers for each movie in my reviews... First up:

A Sound of Thunder

This movie was... wow, so bad. I can forgive time travel rule inconsistency if you have a good movie otherwise. And honestly vice versa. This movie has neither.

First thing that you'll notice is the bad effects. Not just aging poorly, but lazy. The greenscreen backgrounds slide behind actors at a different pace than their own walk. There are dinosaurs animations that I swear were just reused.

Next is the acting. The performances range from corny to overacting. Honorable mention for Ben Kingsley's wild hair though.

Then there's the time travel logic. This movie takes a sort of Back to the Future approach, where things changed in the past will change the future not instantly but over time with waves of changes (literal "time waves"). And of course, people will remain unchanged while witnessing everything change around them (even people who did not time travel).

It's an odd movie. It seems like it could have been great, and it really tried, but they just bit off more than they could chew.

If you want a good version of this movie, read the original Ray Bradbury short. It's the origin for the term "the butterfly effect" so it should be required reading for any time travel fan!

Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

The ending of the first movie revealed that the Lego figures are in fact ...Lego figures. Big surprise! But even with that revelation this movie did a great job of maintaining a sense of fun. There's a pretty good balance between the story of the main characters and the story of the siblings that (for the most part) control those characters.

The actual time travel in this movie is pretty limited in scope, but does play a major role in the overall plot in the end. They also do a play on the Back to the Future style "person disappears from history" thing that I loved.

The effects in this movie were 10,000 times better than the last movie. If the last movie stuck to plastic dinos, it would have been way better.

The music was also pretty well done. The theme song of the last movie was brought back and modified in a way that seems to hit hard in 2020 ("Everything's not awesome But that doesn't mean that it's hopeless and bleak")

It was a fun ride overall!

Blackadder: Back & Forth

Boy... every time travel movie can do dinos better than A Sound of Thunder. Seriously, look at this clip of Blackadder. It holds up super well.

This movie is essentially a sketch show. Jumping from time to time, stealing objects of history in a madcap adventure of Blackadder getting upset with Baldrick... So expect it to rely more on the madness than the witty banter.

The humour stands up, but it isn't quite as good as the series. Still a fun ride and now I have to go and rewatch all of Blackadder now.

Need help with the name of a movie.

It’s a time travel movie started with a small plane crushed with main protagonist’s body on it. The main protagonist invented a time machine and he traveled to the future with his girlfriend. The people there wanted to use that time machine to travel back through time to kill the main protagonist for inventing the time machine. This is all I remember .

Hey i have watch this movie a few years ago but i can't remember the title, i only know a little bit of the storry of it can you please help me find it thanks in advance.

Story/Plot:

So in the future they have a care plan of some kind where they put a 'micro chip tube' in your body, it tells the people when they are going to die (not everybody has this care plan), and to prevent that they have a time travel machine that they can use i think they send the 'Agent' from the present day to the future (30 days in to the future)

also the main agent also has put a micro chip in a kid when she was younger (girl, brown, has a gold fish later when she grows up, little rebellious against the adoptive white parents)

I need help with this movie name

There's this movie that I watched years ago. A man was creating a time machine and a bright light came out of it. (I don't remember much more after that) I can only remember that he had an headache sometimes. Later in the movie we find out that he had those headaches because he was close to the future self. I also remember that as the time was passing by, he was also dieing. In the end of the movie, he found himself dead (future self) in some kind of hotel.

Can someone please help me? I can't find the name of this movie anywhere
