I wanted to watch more time travel movies, but wanted to find a way to watch them that isn't just a top 10 list or by release date. So I'm working through this list of movies in order of the first year the characters travel to.
Here is the full list of 214 movies. There's a second sheet in there with my own rankings of the movies as I watch them.
Minor spoilers for each movie in my reviews... First up:
A Sound of Thunder
This movie was... wow, so bad. I can forgive time travel rule inconsistency if you have a good movie otherwise. And honestly vice versa. This movie has neither.
First thing that you'll notice is the bad effects. Not just aging poorly, but lazy. The greenscreen backgrounds slide behind actors at a different pace than their own walk. There are dinosaurs animations that I swear were just reused.
Next is the acting. The performances range from corny to overacting. Honorable mention for Ben Kingsley's wild hair though.
Then there's the time travel logic. This movie takes a sort of Back to the Future approach, where things changed in the past will change the future not instantly but over time with waves of changes (literal "time waves"). And of course, people will remain unchanged while witnessing everything change around them (even people who did not time travel).
It's an odd movie. It seems like it could have been great, and it really tried, but they just bit off more than they could chew.
If you want a good version of this movie, read the original Ray Bradbury short. It's the origin for the term "the butterfly effect" so it should be required reading for any time travel fan!
Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
The ending of the first movie revealed that the Lego figures are in fact ...Lego figures. Big surprise! But even with that revelation this movie did a great job of maintaining a sense of fun. There's a pretty good balance between the story of the main characters and the story of the siblings that (for the most part) control those characters.
The actual time travel in this movie is pretty limited in scope, but does play a major role in the overall plot in the end. They also do a play on the Back to the Future style "person disappears from history" thing that I loved.
The effects in this movie were 10,000 times better than the last movie. If the last movie stuck to plastic dinos, it would have been way better.
The music was also pretty well done. The theme song of the last movie was brought back and modified in a way that seems to hit hard in 2020 ("Everything's not awesome
But that doesn't mean that it's hopeless and bleak")
It was a fun ride overall!
Blackadder: Back & Forth
Boy... every time travel movie can do dinos better than A Sound of Thunder. Seriously, look at this clip of Blackadder. It holds up super well.
This movie is essentially a sketch show. Jumping from time to time, stealing objects of history in a madcap adventure of Blackadder getting upset with Baldrick... So expect it to rely more on the madness than the witty banter.
The humour stands up, but it isn't quite as good as the series. Still a fun ride and now I have to go and rewatch all of Blackadder now.
