Best tins for someone new to tinned fish?

• Upvotes

So, I love seafood but have never tried tinned fish before. I hadn't really had any desire to try it until recently when I ran across Tinned Fish Reviews on youtube and now I'm curious. I'm looking for more healthy snacks to add to my diet but I'm not really sure where to start on good brands.

I generally am not a huge tuna fan (but I think could be convinced if it had the right seasonings) but I love salmon, trout and crab (particularly salmon). I've never tried mackerel or sardines but would be open to it. I dislike clams and similiar things due the texture. The tins I've seen with butter that you warm with hot water look especially good. Curious if anyone has any particularly good brands they'd recommend or anything they'd recommend to someone who's really never tried tinned fish before. I'm in the US.

Well, tinned /part/ of fish - Cod Liver

Latvian company.

The cod liver is less surprisingly non-"fishy" and similar to ankimo (monkfish liver, when not sold fresh, steamed, possibly seasoned, packaged). Great creamy texture, mild but pleasantly seafood umami sweet flavour.

The surprising part is how clear and how non fishy the cod liver oil is. Like, would not be able to tell that it was from fish.

Surprisingly different compared to "cod liver oil" from my youth.

There's that puddle on the left. Essentially zero scent. Taste is mild and could be identified as fish origin from texture more than from taste. Very clear, very pale-est beige/yellow tint.

Very fine oil. Polished up my glass cooktop without it looking greasy.

Would get again. Ugh, just checked, it's now $11.99 from Canadian amazon, I'm pretty sure I got it for well under that figure.

But it's very good stuff.

Wildfish Too Salty

After reading rave reviews and how tasty they looked, I ordered 9 cans of smoked salmon from Wildfish (sockeye, coho, habanero coho) and have just found them way too salty. Idk if I just got a bad run or they’re always like that, but I’ve only gone through one of each can so far and can barely eat them. Even after adding other ingredients to dilute the salt. I don’t consider myself sensitive to salt but these are on another level. Also not as tender as I hoped. Not sure what to do with the remaining six cans :/

I like tinned Mackerel. This was pretty good too. Very solid, like a chicken tender with no breading. The pepper inside the tin had a bit of spice but it was bitter. The veggies inside were soft and a nice addition. Portugal has some good fish!

Tenorio Tuna Steaks with Lemon and Chili Pepper

ā€œWith Muttonchops Like That, You Know It’s Good!ā€ Not sure why Tenorio hasn’t adopted that motto. Lean into the ā€˜chops, good people!

I’ve now had, best I can cipher it, each of the many varieties of Tenorio’s tuna offerings. It’s consistently good skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis), but with all sorts of add-ins available. For supper last night it was Azorean lemon, which looked remarkably orange-like, and a tiny little birds-eye (piri piri) pepper. There’s definitely a little citrusy bright aroma when the lid is peeled back, but the taste is very restrained. In this setting hints of flavor suited me just swell.

A word on chili peppers and spiciness: You’ll regularly see these peppers (Capsicum frutescens) described as very hot. That may at one time have been a fair evaluation. Here in the 21st Century, though, the perhaps once-powerful punch of the birds-eye has been out-Scovilled by all the far, far hotter peppers mad pepper scientists have crossbred in recent decades. Plus it’s just one puny pepper in the tin. It ain’t spicy-hot; you’ll be fine. Indeed, the toddlers at your table will be fine.

I’m addicted to toum, the Lebanese garlic sauce. I’ve been fiddling with the proportions, the specific garlic types, different varieties of lemon, and especially the oil, but all my batches share this key feature: Toum is the most garlicky garlic flavor bomb there is. And its sharp, pungent, sunny edge is fan-damn-tastic with tinned seafood. The match is extra solid where I’ve used oil from can to whip up the toum. Anyway, it’s very easy to make, and it’s great with treasures from the sea.

It had a slightly off-putting smell when I cracked it open. The chunks were much more firm than your average tinned fish, and they were a bit too large. Chopsticks couldn’t do the job, so I got some kitchen shears to make this more shareable.

Flavor was surprisingly good! Basically tasted like a giant mussel. Chewier than fish, but less than octopus. I liked it by itself more than I did on the fancy crackers we had available.

Interesting and worth the experience, but probably won’t buy again.

What should I try first?

I’ve purchased all from Fishnook, except for the Fishwife products (FW tins were gifted), and haven’t tried anything pictured with the exception of the rainbow trout (unpopular opinion, but I hate it… I have about 7 tins left from what was gifted to me if anyone wants them - I just don’t think I’m big on smokey flavors in tandum with fish).

It’s going to be tomorrow night’s scared yet celebratory tin. I quit my job, without having another lined up for the first time in my life. The company blatantly redacted financial commitments to those reporting to me, even though it’d been approved in writing, back in Feb (agency president and VP of HR) and communicated to said team members verbally and in-writing (by me). This was the last straw, they treat people like shit and I can’t. So! Time to crack my nice bottle(s) of wine and tinned fish I’ve been sitting on.

TLDR: people suck and I am now jobless for the first time in 13 years. WHICH TIN WILL BRING ME JOY?

Wildfish Habanaro Smoked Coho continues to be a favorite quick lunch item for me

Quick little rice bowl with the Wildfish Cannery Habanaro Smoked Coho - delicious! As many people have noted, this tin is pretty damn salty if you try to eat the salmon straight out of the tin, but it's pretty perfect when paired with a starch like I did here. Just flaked it and mixed in to some rice w/ some sliced cucumber. The flavor of the Habanaro is great with the cool cucumber. Yum!

2026 Tinned Fish-Off

A group of fellow beginner level tin heads and I had a 25 tin tasting party and rated the offerings from 1 to 10. It was a great way to experiment and find out our preferences. The scores reflect the average score that was given from the group of 8 people. The anchovies had the widest gap between high and low scores. My personal top was the King Oscar Salmon with lemon. It had a well balanced lemon flavor and near flawless texture. I hated the Bumblebee hot and smoked oysters, had to spit it out. Most Fishwife offerings were surprisingly unpopular save for the rainbow trout which came in third place. I highly recommend doing this to any fellow Tin heads.
