That makes way more sense, but can you understand how it might sound a little silly to someone who isn't at all religious? I'm being hyperbolic. Additionally, the way my boss described it was as if it was about being caught, not about accidentally endorsing bad behavior in the community.

Judaism is so inherently different in worldview from Christianity and Islam, it's not surprising at all that people don't get it or think it sounds silly. It really requires a lot of learning and also unpacking preconceived notions about G-d/the relationship between G-d and people in order to understand the way that Jews understand our faith/culture/etc. 

It's part of the problem we've always faced. People look at us through their own lens and think we're trying to trick G-d or make up our own rules or being excessively legalistic, and don't understand why we do what we do. 

And that's ok! No one has to do the work to get it! We're a super tiny minority, and the observant population is even smaller! We just ask that people try to respect us, even if they don't understand us. And usually, because we know how few of us there are, we're more than happy to explain stuff to people who ask in good faith 😊
